Vega Motor in an S-10??

Postby 74_Vega_GT » Thu May 23, 2019 10:45 am

So, the 82 longbed 60degreeV-6, 2.8L, 4-sp manual, A/C, PS, S-10 I picked up a year or so ago is in need of a motor rebuild. Either a cam lobe is worn causing lifter noise or there is a bad lifter. I have a 89 4.3 on an engine stand in need of a total rebuild, and the 140 from the Vega on an engine stand that was running and only had maybe 5000 miles on fresh rings and sleves when we took it out of the car. The 130 has a header and an Offenhauser dual port on it.
I am considering putting the 140 in the S-10. I am not sure if the bellhousing will bolt up or which one it actually has in it.
The alternative is to get shed of the S10 and put the $$ into finishing FrankenVega. Too many vehicles around here.

Not sure if the vega bell housing will bolt up the the s-10 4 speed, think the 2.8 was the start of the metric bell housing, not to mention fabing motor mounts and accessories to fit. The 4.3 is not worth it because it is totally different from the 2.8 or 3.4 that was in the camaro, plus being an 89, it is the pre-balance shaft block, think that started in 92. Honestly, I would sell it as parts and put the money to FrankenVega since you can find s-10's from 94 and down for around 1200 on craigslist. I have a similar problem, keeping too many "I can fix it" projects that are not worth it thus blocking time to spend on my desired project cars, lol. Finally put my foot down and going to clear out 8 cars/trucks from my inventory this summer so I can get back to the Monza.
Some people are like slinkies. They serve absolutely no useful purpose, but still put a smile on your face when pushed down a flight of stairs.

The Vega bell housing is unique to the 140 Vega engine and the S-10 bell will not mount to the 140.
