Got an H-body! I'm back!

Postby Monzadude » Mon Dec 30, 2019 5:38 am

After having to sell my 79 Skyhawk in 2012 I wasn't sure I'd ever have another one. About a month ago a friend of mine told me about an 80 Skyhawk for sale online. I was watching the add closely but there's no way I could afford it. Early last week the add disappeared and I have to admit I felt horrible that it was gone.
Then on boxing day around 8pm my much, much better half calls me out to the barn. I went out to help and see a truck backing up. What the hell? The my brain finally kicks in to the shape and I realize it's a flatbed tow truck with the Skyhawk on it! Holy crap!!!!
So I'm now the proud owner of a 1980 Skyhawk S. Brown with tan interior. 3.8L with the 4 speed trans.
An old guy was going to scrap it because he's going into a retirement home and didn't think it was worth anything. The tow truck driver told him it wasn't scrap and is splitting the money with him.
The old guy bought it for his wife. She wouldn't drive it in the summer because it doesn't have air conditioning. And wouldn't drive it in the winter because its rear wheel drive. So he parked it inside a garage. And there it sat. Not sure how long exactly but it was decades.
It's from a dealer in pembroke Ontario. I haven't been completely under but from what I can see there is almost no rust at all. Anywhere! It does need some work to be road worthy again but with no rust it should be too bad.
So thats my ramble for now. My phone won't let me post pics for some reason. I'll post them whenever I get into a computer.

Your wife deserves something very special for that act of kindness and thoughtfulness.

You say it's a Skyhawk S? Is that like a Monza S? Basically a re-bodied vega? In 1980? I thought that was only a 78 thing? just chewing up the rest of the leftover Vegas shells.

Never heard of the re-bodied Vegas thing but my last skyhawk was an "S" and it was a 79. To the best of my knowledge they are the base model. They don't come with extras unless it was ordered with them. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

"The 1978 Monza line expanded to include rebadged holdovers from the Vega line, which ended production after the 1977 model year. Chevy grafted a new Monza front end onto the previous Vega hatchback and wagon body-styles. The Monza "S", marketed as the Monza price leader, used the Vega hatchback body. With production of only 2,000 units, it was speculated that this was simply an effort to use up a stock of leftover 1977 Vega bodies."
Yeah I guess the Skyhawk S was was just a base model, I had never heard that one before.

Yes, I do lol

"return to the fold. Come back to a group after an absence, as in Matthew taught for a number of years, but now he's returned to the fold as vice-president of the firm . This term employs fold in the sense of "an enclosure for sheep," which has been used figuratively since the first half of the 1300s."
