Loosen the nut a turn then tap the spindle on the side where the ball joint goes through it.
The spring tension will help pop the taper loose. Then put the jack stands back under the lower control arm and lower the car to keep weight on the spring while you put the shocks on.
You may have enough clearance with the shocks in place.
Only remove the nuts with the shocks in place or a chain restraining the spring.
Then check and adjust the clearance at the upper control arm.
