Just bought a 1977 Monza Spyder

Postby Laidback » Fri Jun 12, 2020 6:04 am

So I bought the above and finally it has arrived home. The car is not all original equipment so it will be a work in progress. It did pass a safety so iwe can drive it. It comes with a 350-4 bbl with a shift kit. The first thing I'm looking to do is swap the wheels out and put 14". My problem is according to all I've read, the bolt pattern is 4 X 4 or 4 x 101.6mm. Everything I'm seeing is 4 X 100 mm as far as aftermarket. OEM wise, I've found nothing so far.
Will the 4 X 100 be too loose or will they even fit?
Thank you

It is not advisable to install 100mm wheels. While some people have done it, it will put a strain on the studs and may not be concentric and give vibration issues. You could also damage the taper on the wheels where the lugs nuts tighten down. Bottom line, it is not correct. Kind of like cross threading a bolt, yeah the nut is on and it is tight but..........you get the idea. Either get the correct size wheels (difficult in a 4 x 4 pattern) or redrill the rotors and hubs or even a adapter is better than forcing them on. This is why most people upgrade to a 5 bolt pattern.

The more I've been reading, going to a 5 bolt seems to be the safer route to go.
Thank you for the reply

Going 5 lug also gives you a vast array of rim and tire choices.

If you decide to stay 4 lug, there is a company called u.s. mags that will custom drill certain models in their catalogue. That's what I did with my car, I converted the rear to 5 lug but I left the front 4 lug and have them drill the mags (15x5s) to four on four. It was only 15 or $17 up charge.

That's the same colour as ours. I came across a set of 15" with tires for $750.00 Waiting to hear back from them.
Going to a speed shop Saturday to see if they have anything that I can buy and get custom drilled to fit proper. I'm just not sure about going to 15". If I need to replace drums and front disks to go to a 5 bolt, she's going to ground me for a month :(
Plus probably cut off my spending allowance for the car.
