Headliner Interchangeable??

Postby Mark in INdiana » Sun Oct 11, 2020 8:26 pm

Hey guys, does anyone know if hatchback and notchback headliners of similar years are interchangeable? Specifically, will a notchback headliner fit into a hatchback? Thank you. Mark.

The roof is about 7" longer on a trunk car so headliner is different

Thank you for the pic.
By the way, I’ve emailed Ray McCelland in the link aboveboard see if he is still making his replacement headliners. I’m awaiting a reply. Mark.

I had asked him last year, said he was thinking on it, never heard from him again. Keep us posted, I really need one too, lol. Been thinking about what type of material I could use for the backboard to make my own, something that could be shaped with heat maybe.

I used a sheet of 3/32 albumin as backer, took the old head liner and laid it out on the sheet and traced the contour on to the sheet. You may haft to cut the headliner apart to trace the curved parts. cut the sheet to the outside lines. their will be 2 notches at the front of the headliner. where you traced the inside curves, use a brick chisel and hammer to lightly hit the curved lines. this will cause the outer sections to start bending up. It will take multiple passes to do this. where the notches are in the front they will pull together as you work the bends in. test fit in car as necessary. I put a layer of hushmatt on the back for noise control and spray mounted the headliner material to the out side. Not the ease way to do it, but it should out last me.
