East Coast Monza Search

Postby Cobra1365 » Sun Dec 19, 2021 10:30 am

I had a crazy idea this morning that it would be fun to have a project to restore a 79 Monza Notchback. It was my wife’s first car and would make an awesome present. So, I did several searches and all I’ve found were hugely modified drag cars etc. Did these things disappear from Earth?

Sorry for the blurry pic…cameras in 79 were not what they are today!

Welcome to the site!

Like most cheap cars of any era they were considered disposable and most were just run until they wore out. Most survivors are 1/4 or 1/8 mile race cars. But there still are a few out there to be found. You just have to keep looking. They do not pop up often, you may also want to consider expanding your search, and be willing to ship a car to you. Most of these cars rusted away in the int he NE or upper midwest.

I will keep an eye out. About 3 years ago there was a 1979 Monza Town coupe, 2.5 Iron duke, 4-speed manual, no A/C or power brakes or steering for sale near me. But no one was really interested in the car locally. Also you may consider a Pontiac Sunbird coupe, they are similure.

Found two candidates on Facebook Marketplace.

#1 Here is a 1976 notchback advertised in Auburn, Maine that seems fairly stock.

Price is a little rich for my blood.

#2 A 1980 coupe is available in Cleveland, TN.

Good luck.

I have a comment...
The day of finding a descent H-Body in you're neighborhood or city is slim without paying a premium. Here's why, A short few years ago it was still possible but coming up on 2022 H-Bodies have been crushed into oblivion and what's left is of poor choice and barely worth restoring. A couple of years ago I went looking for a nice un-touched driver for a reasonable price with very few results. Buy a H-Body off Craigslist today running or not and you can be assured of a rust bucket beyond repair. Privately you would be well served to find one with minor rust and complete and pay the premium. My,point, Lets stop promoting the the idea you can still buy H-Body's for cheap and fix'er up for a nickle and a dime. Occasionally, You will see on this website someone taking a H-Body to be crushed. Nine out of ten times is because it's sat in someones back yard for 20 years and has no collector value.

My advice for what Is's worth, If you own a clean rust free H-Body "hold onto it". Wise up, look around, you got a car that is beyond rare with an incredible Mythological history from the 70's and increasing in value. It don't get any better than that.
