Windshield Option

Postby zeke » Thu Oct 13, 2022 1:53 pm

Second gen H body windshields haven't been produced for years. There may be a few NOS pieces floating around in the system but they want big money.

We now have a solution!

Monza Madness member Jonathan Hecht discovered that the profile is really close to his Silverado's windshield. MM member Jim Bly is an automotive glass specialist and confirmed the fit.

If you can't find somebody in your area to cut down the windshield, contact Jim Bly and he may be able to help you out.

Includes 75 - 80 Monza, Skyhawk, Sunbird & Starfire coupes and hatchbacks

Excludes: Vega, Astre & Monza S

Here's the instructions from Jim the Glass Guy:

"You will need this primer also for the pinch weld and glass so the urethane will adhere. This is a must or you will have problems. One tube of urethane might work, I would get two just in case. I use a battery operated caulk gun. If you use a hand gun , make sure it's a good one. Your fore arm will probably be screaming by the time you're done.
Also, you only have about 10 minutes from the time you start caulking to when you need to set the windshield."

This is a really cool find with great detail. Windshields are really hard to find when I was looking even a few years back. I'm still hoarding my spare that has a optical issue on the driver side.

Thanks BBT;

Altho my car wasn't rotted in this area, I stripped the windshield pinch weld down to bare metal. Epoxy primed, painted and let cure for a week before installing the glass. That was a good time to paint the top of the dash, defroster vents and VIN tag.

Nice find!
I probably would never try to do it myself, but how do you cut tempered safety glass without ending up with a bucket of glass fragments?

Hey Ken;

There are other methods but I've seen YouTube videos of it being done where they score the glass, dump alcohol along the score and set it on fire to melt the plastic laminate layer. :shock:

No? Yeah me neither :lol:

There was an episode of Wheeler Dealers that showed the process of cutting down a windshield. It was involved and the guy had skills!
