Postby monzaman69 » Fri Aug 04, 2006 5:16 pm

What aftermarket pumps are a direct bolt on for the V8 monza?

Short pump? Long pump?

Shaft size?

Links?

Thanks,

Due to the room restrictions, the Short WP is mostly used on SBC engines in the Monza/Vega V-8 install.

So most short pumps would have the hose location correct, and take the stock pullies?

Was looking at this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 0012854170

Looks like You would have to add the machine fitting for the heater though.

Thanks :)

I'm also very interested in a polished Weiand 8208 model which I would like to use to replace my old leaky and rusty one on the new engine.

Does it have the heater hose connection?

The Monza does indeed have a 3/4" fan pilot vs the standard 5/8". The Vette also uses a 3/4" pilot short water pump. The only thing to watch is the top threaded boss which some applications require. If your accessories do not need that top boss, like mine for instance, you can use a short pump for a 72-82 Vette. Of course since they are for a Vette you can find them in different styles, chrome, aluminum, etc. I use a chrome one for a Vette. Everyhting else matches up fine.

There's two different short water pumps. This info is from Edelbrocks web site. You can see that there is a difference inthe distance from block to to the front of the hub. And the pilot shaft dimension. If you're using stock pulleys and brackets you should get the '71-'82 so your pulleys line up without shimming and the pilot hole fits. I get the impression that most aftermarket short pump pulleys and brackets are made for the earlier short pump. But that's just my assumption.
Another of my assumptions is that th earlier pumps all have a threaded pipe plug in the top and the corvette '71-'82 pump has a flat boss.

".......
Short-Style Pump for most 1955-72 cars and trucks (5/8" pilot shaft) ....
Fits all 1955-68 S/B Chevy passenger cars, 1969-70 350 c.i.d. Corvettes and 1955-72 light duty trucks. Has 3/4" ball/ball bearing. Dimension from block surface to hub: 5-5/8". Inlet diameter: 1.80".

Short-Style Pump for 1971-82 Corvettes (3/4" pilot shaft) ....
Fits all 1971-82 S/B Corvettes. Comes with heavy-duty 3/4" ball/roller bearing. Dimension from block surface to hub: 5-13/16". Inlet diameter: 1.80"......"

There's also a reverse rotation short pump used on '80s era corvettes with TPI serpentine belt.

I have had 2 Vette pumps on my car over the years. One had a threaded boss like a Monza, the other had a 3/4" (I think) water outlet. Not sure why they were different, but either one worked in my case. I just capped off the the one with the water outlet and installed a chrome bolt in the one that had the threads.

BEWARE OF CLOCKWISE ROTATION SERPENTINE BELT VERSIONS OF THE CORVETTE WATER PUMP, THE CAR WILL NOT CYCLE COOLANT AND OVERHEAT. IF IT ROTATES "CLOCKWISE" ITS NOT THE CORRECT ONE, YOU WANT STANDARD ROTATION. YOU ARE LOOKING AT ROTATION FROM THE FLYWHEEL ON ALL ENGINES TO DETERMINE ROTATION DIRECTION

If you are going to use a Vette pump you need to use the 71-82 pump. Be aware that the Vette pump does not have the machined flat with threaded boss on top. My car doesn't need that so I am fine without it. I would suggest checking the position of the flange on any pump you use. Sometimes these vary a bit and I ended having to press the hub on about 3/16" further to get perfect belt alignment. If it needs to come forward then you can simply use shims between the flange and pulley. If you do need to press the flange on you need to remove the back cover to support the shaft while pressing the flange on, otherwise you will damage the pump. If you need a stock V8 Monza pump I may still be able to source one. cjbiagi@yahoo.com
