s10 manual gearbox swap anyone done it?

Postby shoebox1.1 » Thu Nov 23, 2006 11:37 pm

if the s10 spindles interchange with g body and H, could you swap in a manual s10 box and related parts? i want to go to the yard and "25 dollar" carry out manual brakes, spindles, calipers rotors, M.C. and prop valve. should i get the s10 idler and shaft etc too??

The S-10 manual box will bolt in and fit the pitman arm for the Monza power steering application. The input shaft is a different spline than the early p/s box. I believe the change occurred in 1977 or '78 - for a Nova at least, I think it was across the board.

The only problem is that the S-10 manual box has a sloooooow ratio. It's about 4 turns lock-to-lock. My brother put one in his '86 Monte Carlo drag car. Driving that, I don't think I would use one on the street. At times, you're all arms and elbows.

i put the manual s10 box (4 BOLT TOP PLATE)in my 78 wagon that had power steering . . it is a slow ratio. one of the street rod places makes a quicker ratio but i don't remember who

Can you use a thirdgen F-Body box? I thought they were somewhat interchangeable between the S10 and F-Body.

well i finally got the 88 manual s10 gearbox installed, a 78 monza power steering tilt column and a power steering steering shaft from a 78 monza. the shaft goes on the column ok but does not fit the 88 manual gearbox. the splines are just a lil bigger it wont work. im going to have to crossbreed and fabricate somthing now... :(

here is a site with good info.

http://www.borgeson.com/StreetRodProduct.htm

looks like the monza box is 3/4-36 and the S-10 from 86 up is 3/4-30.
