Backing Plates for Drum Brakes

Postby res0o7eb » Thu Jun 28, 2007 10:27 pm

Just a place holder for anything related to the backing plates for the drum brakes on a 5-lug conversion.

Anybody tried to put 11x2 drums on their 5-lug conversion? What backing plate did you use?

I had thought about this myself while I was making my Corvette front brake conversion. I was looking at '73-'77 Chevelle wagon/ Monte Carlo backing plates.

Or, Master Power Brakes has a complete kit:

You can get these brakes off of "95" ERA big GM cars Capric, Buick and so on.

 Now this has my attention. I would really like to hear from anyone who has done this swap.
I did find this conversion assembly from Master Power Brakes.

I also measured the bolt pattern for the backing plate flange on a Monza 7.5" rear and a '71 Nova 8.2" rear end. They appear to be the same size, but I was standing on my head and wearing bi-focals. I do believe that all of the '60s and '70s rear ends share the same backing plate flange bolt pattern. Having read of 11" brakes being swapped from the larger Chevys to smaller ones, I would have to assume that the spacing between the axle flange and backing plate mounting flange is the same. All this would lead me to think that these 11" drum assemblies should fit a 7.5" rear with a five lug bolt pattern axle.

Also and More specifically--- 93 - and up (?) GM drum backing plates are the same---

I can't confirm this 100% for sure--- but I will be able to soon. I'm about to put on backing plates from a 93 firebird.

They look Completely identical in every way. (early 80's - 92 GM backing plates are a different 3 bolt design)

Does anybody have a part number and/or source for the backing plates? My online search has been in vain.
I just don't want to go to the junk yard and pull the plates off, because the axles have to be taken off first - too much work. I'm lazy.
I think its possible to get those components similar to MPBrakes kit for half the price. I'm cheap.

Tom,

I looked at several Chevelle/Monte Carlo parts suppliers and found no one had backing plates available. Looks like it's Master Power or the salvage yard being the only choices.

Maybe you could get the yard to remove the backing plates for you.

Update on the backing plates. I believe almost every mid size GM rwd car has the same backing plate flange (late 60's to late 70's--- and 93 up to ?).

However as far as a bolt on application goes--- Ebrake location is an issue. For example: 80's and up F-body's use the opposite hole on the backing plate for the ebrake cable. But I believe all you have to do is drill out the opposite side for it to work. But I say screw that, I'm just gonna get some off a newer S-10; should bolt right up.

GM already punched that hole. They're reversible. The holes are forward for each side.
I think the problem is not finding plates with the right axle tube flange pattern but its the distance from the axle tube flange to the axle flange. Its tighter on the h-bodies I believe. So the plate has to be inset back a little. I could be wrong about this but I seem to remember years ago looking at f-body plates and they were different.

wow i didnt even think of that. just flip them around!

but are you saying that no other backing plates will work on a 75 Monza except 76-80 Monza's?

cuz my next course of action is to find some really clean backing plates off a newer s-10. thanks for your help!

I don't know that there aren't other plates that work but I don't think so. Like I mentioned in that other thread, you can have these if you pay shipping. Really clean they are not. And I don't have any of the hardware but I'd think it was common stuff used on other vehicles.
