Front coilover conversion for streetbound H-bodies?

Postby 70styleVega » Fri Dec 28, 2007 2:06 pm

I'm considering a front coilover conversion for my 75 Vega, in place of trimming V8 Monza front coils. I scanned H-body.org and did find a member named 88iroc who had done this in 2006, and left a couple of pictures.

So who has done this recently, for street/strip H-bodies? What hardware was used (brand and part numbers)? Most importantly, how did it drive?

I havent done this on a vega, but I did it for a freinds 67 nova. it was a lot of work, eliminated a few parts, and didn't really change anything about how it drove. Id think about it for three months and if you really feel that you still want to do it, then go for it.

I saw a write up about 2 years ago on V8Monza. A guy used a pair a Small Block coil over shocks for a s10 and had to cut about 2 more inch's out of the coil with the adjuster nut in the lowest position. They do bolt in, But I would not cut anything off the coil till after you see how your car sits.

There is a huge selection of springs and shocks available. The springs can be had in different lengths with different spring rates. The shocks are available in different lengths with a wide variety of valving. I would say the hardest part would be picking the right shock and spring.
If you take your time and select the correct springs and shocks, this wide selection would allow you to tune the suspension far better than any stock setup.

Maybe give Alson Chassisworks a shot. They seem like they have a rpetty good range of coilovers.. I'd presume you'd need to have an idea what spring weight you'd want to run, first.

I know for a fact, that Camaro front shocks are the same as H bodies. So you caould use a kit like this as long as you found the right heigth and spring rate.

Vega Man Larry has a coilover setup for an S-10 on his Vega. Maybe he'll pop in.

I did coil-overs when i built my own control arms to get the adjustability I wanted on the front end. I cut the factory spring mount out of the frame and welded in some adjustable shock mounts from Applied Racing and used single adjustable shock from Alden Eagle. I definately helped the car handle better at 170mph, plus it was easy to adjust ride height.

Oops, reread the post, mine was not street driven. It did see a couple street miles to and from shows and cruises, I do plan on putting the car back on the street and putting a few miles on it.

Now if we can only get tubular upper and lower A arms from Spohn. Maybe even an upper rear shock mount to use coil overs on the rear.
