My control arm bushings

Postby 10secvega » Fri Mar 14, 2008 6:27 pm

I didn't want to replace my front control arm bushing with stock rubber ones.I also didn't want polyurathane ones, they're to stiiff, bind and squek. So i built my own out of Del -A- Lum plastic. The same material Global West makes theres out of.What do you guys think?

They look nice but wouldn't they be just as stiff as polyurathane?

delarum control arm bushings

Postby chevyart » Sat Mar 15, 2008 11:23 am

yo 10secvegagreat move on your part. thats the best stuff on the planet to use for tje front control arms, and in the rear if you could do it. I swear by global west and all of their products. Most importantly, how did you make the bushings, and where did you get the delarum, or did global west do it for you. I would really appreciate a godd explanation on how to do this thanks Chevy Art

I got the Delarum loacally at this place http://www.bakerplastics.com/

I then bought new rubber bushings, pushed out the rubber and had my machinist friend turn down the delarum to fit the inner and outer sleeves.I have about $160 in making them.

If you don't mind me asking, why did you buy new bushings and not just knock the rubber out of the old ones? Were the old ones just beyond repair or did you want to start with all new? Without buying the new bushings what was the cost? If that is $160 for all 8 that's a good deal for what you ended up with.

I just wanted to start with all new stuff.Figured it would be easier.I could have saved $80 by reusing the old ones.

So $80 for the bushings ($10/each) and $80 for the Del-A-Lum and machine work (which I assume your friend did for nothing). And you proably have some Del-A-Lum left over? So if you rebuilt the originals you might have $80 to $100 into them. People spend alot more to make their car handle that much better. I vote this for a best of.

I believe the material you are talking about is Delrum. A form of hard plastic with similar characteristics to teflon. Or is this something else?

My comments on it from use in other appications; motor mounts, tubular a-arms etc.; very easy to machine and cost effective over other materials. Requires no lubricant so long as it's not a real hard press fit into a part.

Down sides I know of for use in a street car will be (as mentioned) an increase in stiffness over rubber or urethane designs with more compliance. The problems I've seen in time are greater wear on the torque box or similar mounted due to the greater strain put on the sheet steel due to lack of flex you'd have with rubber.

Not a bad thing if you want slot car handling. But not a cushy ride or the more durable choice for other reasons.

Nicely done no matter.

I've heard the best part about this stuff is that it doesn't take a set (flat spot) like urethane can.

So would you guys not use Urethane then? Should I ditch mine?

BTW You look hot in that pic, Wayne. LOL! Nice H-Body.
