rear disc brakes

Postby cosworth0135 » Sun Oct 25, 2009 11:17 am

How come no body uses gm disc brakes for a 7.5 rear axle , do they not bolt up or something they were available for many cars, ta's camaro's s10's and so on I am building up a 7.5 and don't want to use c clip eliminators and disc brakes are an acceptable alternative to axle retention

I'm planning on using the complete 99 & newer S-10 4 wheel disc setup. I have the parts but have not tried them yet.

I have a set of 97 Camaro LS1 rear disc brakes for mine, but haven't installed them yet. I know that many have used Eldorado rear disks.

I don't think there's anything from an F-body that will BOLT on without any fabrication; the backing plate bolt pattern is different where the caliper bracket mounts, and the H-body(or S-10) axles would have to be machined to fit inside a rotor.

Did the factory have to machine each set of axles on disc/disc s-10's?it was available on 2 and 4 wheel drives I'll keep researching just thought i would ask in case some one actually tried it the 2wd s10 disc rear is the same width as the drum setup wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface at 54.5 inches

Please keep researching. But I believe S10 4WD will not work. S-10 2WD Blazer 1999 on has rear discs and the correct axle length I believe. S-10 Blazer 2WD may be the key as the S-10 2WD Pickup may have had drums on the rear way into the 2000's.

It was the s10 blazer I was referring to, I am going to go boneyarding Wednesdy possibly to purchase a disc s10 blazer rear and find out for sure but i have also seen 2wd truck axles w/ discs advertised too, same 54.5 inches

something in the length of the rear disk blazer is different than the normal drum rear of the truck , i know there was a spacer that was required to use the blazer disks on the trucks

I seen that,, they sell them spacers for $29.00 and if I have to take my axles to a machinist it is at least a 1 hour trip not to mention the 1 hour of labor(shop labor rates are normally $65 an hour) all to use eldorado brakes on my s-10 axles I just thought it would make more sense to use s-10 brakes on my s-10 axles, I am like someone else in that I don't car about the Ebrake I have been driving 25 years and can probably count on 1 hand when I needed to use it I'll keep everyone posted

Actually, several people have dont the conversion.
They did have to fab up the mounting bracket for the calipers.

Their was one club member who built a very nice red Vega.
He not only installed the rear disc brakes, but a Corvette steering column, also.
Hd had a very nice web site with complete step-by-step details and color photos of both projects.
This back in the early 2000s when H-Body was on yahoo and then V8Monza.
Does anyone remember the guy and/or the web site.

In the meantime, try this site for some helpfull info.
