rear coil spring v8 vega

Postby general_lee01 » Thu Jan 20, 2011 11:44 pm

i got a 74 vega gt wagon. 327 sbc 5 speed with 10 bolt rear end with factory mount welded on it. i have been having a problem with the rear end wheel hopping and it was traveling so much the pinion yoke was slapping the floor. i put lakewood 50/50 shocks and that helped a little. but i still get the wheel hop. it has stock vega gt spring in it now. i was wondering what stiffer spring i could put in it other than what i got. i cant find any aftermarket ones. any help would be great thanks

Hi,
one of the guys here made up some adapter brackets for the upper control arms which relocate the uppers, and can eliminate wheel hop problems.

Wheel hop is very common on the 75 and earlier vegas.Search for posts that contain "stop hop" brackets also check the condition of your control arm bushings , after all 35 + years takes its toll .

Stiffer springs won't solve a wheel hop problem. Find or make some "stop hop" bars - raise the rear of the upper control arm about 2" (to change the Instant Center of the suspension), and replace the control arms with something stouter. Suppliers that post here are: Spohn, Overkill Race Cars, and UMI Performance have H-body control arms available.

ok i have some custom controls arms on the uppers. i had them made at a local chassis shop. they have hiem joints on both ends so i can get alot of adjustment. cus when whoever welded them brackets on the rear end welded them to far back so i have positive pinion angle so i had them upper controls made to fix that. it helped the wheel hop some but it still wheel hops. could i have a link or something for them stop hops brackets. or if some one has them for sale let me know. i want to get them asap so i can get this wheel hop problem fixed. and do you recemend i use the stock vega gt springs or use different ones? thanks

I dont think you can buy them anymore, and from the picture i have (posted) i get about 3.35" up... but i've never used these or have any experience with them, i've just been collecting some information in case i get wheel hop. So i cant really say.

When I made mine, I raised the rear up 2".

Running drag radials, I only encounter a little hop now on marginal tracks. Most of the time it's fine. It 60-foots in the 1.90s, for comparison to what you run.

I originally had slapper bars on it, but they're way too rough on the street.

hey general alot of the guys use 82-92 camaro rear coil springs. raises the rear about 1 inch .they also use air bags in these that will give you a little extra stiffening action and also lets you put a little pre-load (more air) in the passenger side to help the traction. i know with leaf spring cars, stiffening the leaf springs eliminates the wheel hop. this is the great trick from the 60s on the super stock cars. not really sure if this trick applies to the coil spring rear setups like in our vegas. maybe someone else will chime in on this one, as i could use this help for my vega also . thanks art

I built a V8 vega 30 years ago and used no hops bars. At the time they were made by Genuine Suspension. They absolutely worked. The photos and sketch from Badbowtie are spot on. Find someone to fab them and it will cure your problem. I tried air shocks, stiffer springs, traction bars. None worked. Changing the suspension angle is the key.
