Master Cylinder - Replacement (for future refference)

Postby IgotzaStarfire » Thu Jul 11, 2013 11:09 pm

Today , I had mine explode(not really but needed a new one desperately).

Well today I went down and annoyed the crap out of my local Advanced Auto Parts salesmen because they no longer sold them for my starfire and I was like can you just grab a couple back there and see if we can match one up and sure enough we did "Cardone 10-1738" after getting it home it fit perfectly I did not need to make any modification what so ever to anything!

I hope you have power brakes since that master has a larger bore than the Starfire one.

ofr what it's worth...
I have a 75 Vega and it was initially a manual brake CW car.
I added a 75 Vega power booster and used an MC from the same year, but Vette appl and it bolted right up.
The bore for the Vette manual brakes is 1" and for power 1 1/8", so keep that in mind as the stock MC is only 3/4".
The only minor adjustment I had to do was to add a little 'filler rod' in the input shaft to make up the hole. I ended up using a grade 8 1/2" bolt with the head cut off.
Pretty simple.

I just did this. I won a gift certificate to Napa at a car show, so I ordered a master cyl. Mine stopped the car well but weeped fluid. They had 2 that fit.... a cheap one and an expensive one. I was shocked to find that after I bench bled it and bolted it on..it stopped the car even better than before and I didn't have to bleed the brakes! I probably should but it's stopping just fine and not weeping any fluid for the time being.

I have a 77 Monza Spyder and want to eliminate the booster since it don't work. Will the rod need to be modified, or will it work as is. Steve

Hi Steve,

I could be mistaken, but the rod is with your booster. Your MC would just have a dimple on the back of the piston for the booster stud to compress against.
So if you have a power booster and power MC and you want to rid of your booster, I think you'll have to get a MANUAL MC and you'll tie that into the pedal in the other hole than what's being used now.

You might consider staying with your power brakes and send it out to be R&R'd.

Art,

Cars through '75 with the solid front rotors and manual brakes used a 3/4" bore master with the pedal rod attached, the ones with power brakes, naturally, did not have a pedal rod. '76-'77 Vegas with manual brakes used another 3/4" bore master without the rod, and power brake cars used another different 3/4" bore master. H-specials with the vented rotors used the same 7/8" master with- or without power brakes.

thanks cos. i knew about the 3/4 bores in all the vegas, but didnt know there was a difference because of that rod for the power brake model. will have to keep that in mind, as i try and note all the little differences in the parts for these nice little cars of ours art
