QA1 Coilovers on an H-Body?

Postby JimW » Mon Sep 09, 2013 9:41 pm

Has anyone tried to put a set of these QA1 Coilovers on the front of an H -Body with stock Control Arms?

http://www.summitracing.com./parts/hal-gs501-10350c

They look useable but we can't tell if:
A: They will be able to be adjusted once installed
B: The stock shock mount will hold the weight of the car
C: The whole assembly will go in with the lower control arm installed
Any answers would be a big help

Yes to all your questions. Tim Mcabe used I believe an S10 kit. I have a first gen camaro kit. I would go the S10 route if I change them. I also have there R series single adjustable kit, I would not use those again. Spend the extra money on double adjustables if you are going to be doing any tuning with the shocks.

Thanks for the quick response! So the S10 kit would be a better way to go i assume, and double adjustable coilovers look like a better choice in the long run. What springs should go in a small block h-body? Summit Racing has weight recommendations for the spring rates on the website, but how much does the front end weigh normally?

http://www.summitracing.com./parts/hal- ... /model/s10
These springs have a 250lb spring rate and the recommended front end weight is 1500-1700lbs, is this in the ball park of where a small block chevy h-body is?

I have the 250lb springs and they are too light. Tim went with 350 lb springs and seems happy with them. I would go with 350 if i change mine. I plan on changing to a true coil over spring that overkill race cars has a set up for.

Light springs work great if there is enough spring length.

New to this forum and have a question with regards to using the s-10 coil over kit

I recently purchased a 75 vega with a supercharged 383 . The previous owner looks like used the stock susp and wedged some aftermarket Mickey Mouse wedges between the coils on the spring to raise the height . I bought moog 5624's to swap in but thinking this might be a better option if the height is adjustable with this coil over kit ...... How much adjustability is there and is it a direct bolt in with stock 75 control arms

Thx

vegadude has it correct. I recently purchased the QA1 gs401 shocks, the 10" springs that come with it are too tall for a monza, and some of you cut the springs to adjust height, I looked at the different springs and vegadude is correct, the mustang II springs are the best size. They are 8" tall, so 2 inches shorter then the others, and are the correct diameter at both ends. tThe part # is 8mb375, 375 is the pound rating, it goes up from there. these are a direct bolt in no problems. To add I have aje upper and lower control arms too. My tire size is 23 1/2" tall and the fender height is 24" at the shocks lowest setting, If you pm me, I can send a pic of the height if you send me your email addy, hth everyone

If I understand correctly I can order a S10 QA1 front coil over kit and get Mustang 2 springs It will be a bolt in adjustable package with stock vega control arms. I have the stock 72 lca's. I'm tired of fighting front springs!!! I'm also looking at the Viking setup available on ebay, anyone have any reviews on those? Lovin this thread, very helpfull.

I pulled the trigger on the Viking front coilovers with 350 lb rate. I didn't trust the strength or the stock control arm pocket so I cut a piece of 1/8 plate to fit and installed it inside the lca, easy. I had to crank
up the spring more than I anticipated, I was worried it would sit to high right off the bat.I have 185/65/15 tires 24.5 inches from the ground to middle of fender opening, rides great. I would say these springs may be to short for a monza, don't know for sure they're 9 inch springs.
