steering column swap monza/vega advice needed

Postby SOLSAKS » Sat Jan 25, 2014 11:39 am

i have a 1977 factory equipped V8 305 Monza coupe/notchback
FROM FACTORY IT HAD A NON TILT COLUMN
i sold 18 years ago
when i got it back it had a black pontiac sunbird column
it has a badly cracked plastic collar ( the part visible in the interior of car )
that goes around ignition switch, etc.

there is a column for sale on ebay
title: Vega/Monza Tilt Steering Column
iam wondering if a 1977 column is unique from any other year
and basically if this column will work in my car
the seller says he has used this column in a 1976 and a 1977 vega in the past
and knowing h bodies share a lot of components it may work
anyone that knows more about this, please let me know, i need a column.
( would rather have a non tilt to be honest if anyone has a nice one )
thanks

Dave,

As far as I know all H-bodies Columns are the same from at least 74 to 80, I have swapped in Monza Tilt column's into 76/77 Astre's without an issue, other than you have to swap out the complete Tilt Column, including the extension shaft. I hope that helps

Also as I did not see a link to the Column you are thinking of buying, all H-Body Column's I have seen have the small lever behind the Ignition Switch/Tumbler were the key is inserted.

The '73 manual steering column I am replacing has a metal upper housing and a plastic shroud. I am also wondering how to replace the broken shrould with the shroud I am taking out of the car. The column came from Dave's Vega Village in Canada( most likely with the plastic in one piece) so he may have one for your model also. I would sure like to get hold of some alignment spacers to make sure the install is right. If I do you are welcome to use them for your install.
