Sticky Steering Wheel

Postby ol55 » Tue Feb 18, 2014 10:45 pm

Is there anything to cure a sticky steering wheel? This Gt wheel was not on the car but sitting under the hatch in all kinds of weather. I tried Murphy's Oil soap, Ajax, and dish soap and the wheel is still sticky. It is not just sticky on the outer rim but even on the spokes. Someone told me alot of the steering wheels from the 70's are that way unless garaged.

Even when they are kept out of the UV they still leach sticky oil. There is a break point where they get so bad they just won't clean up and the only option is to use a wrap of some sort. Eventually the oil will leach through the wrap also but this takes a year or two. I use carb cleaner and finish up with a scrub brush and soap. In the winter time you can clean the wheel lightly once a week but in the summer almost daily.

The cure: Buy after market or a period Camaro or Firebird wheel.

Fast Orange hand cleaner wipes or Goo Gone gel spray.
Mine was garaged and wrapped still got sticky.

if you are about to give up it might be worth tossing in the dish washer, thats how i cleaned the steering wheel form my 80' z28. Just make sure there are no metal things poking the spokes or face, it WILL leave a mark cause they get so hot.

My GT wheel was pretty sticky too.
I use Mother's Protectant on it. It not only brings a good luster back to it, helps to condition it some, but rids of the stickiness.
It's not a long term fix, but easy to apply as needed.

The only fix I have found is to use the SEM vinyl dye. I did mine over 2 years ago and its still good!
