Tilt Steering Column Questions

Postby starfire » Sun Aug 10, 2014 7:22 pm

I installed the tilt column that I have in my '78 Starfire. When I make a left turn, the turn signal does not cancel. That probably means I have to replace the cancelling cam. To do that I have to remove the lock plate. My CSM says I need to replace the snap ring that holds the cancelling cam in place. Is this true or can I get away with reusing the old snap ring? If I need a new one, does anyone have a part number for me? They list them on ebay, but none claim they are for my car. Thanks,
Alan

Ok guy's here's my problem. I replaced the ignition switch on my 79 Monza wagon and couldn't get the snap ring back in right and then discovered that the support bearing was trashed. I was able to get a column out of a 77 Monza for $20 but it to had no keys so I had to take it apart also. I have a new snap ring but it doesn't stay in place, it snaps in but doesn't appear thick enough to adequately retain the plate and if I move it the whole assembly comes flying apart. Does the snap ring go into the first or second grove? The book appears to show it goes into the lower groove but when using the locking plate tool and trying to get down to the lower groove the plastic canceller that sits on the spring broke. How do I get this thing back together? :bang:
