Standard Vega Wheel Widths

Postby sportriderok » Tue Aug 19, 2014 12:26 pm

Does anyone know if equipment dictates a 5" or 6" inch wheel? I have found both sizes on the cars I bought and was curious if there was a specific difference as to why they used the wheels they did.

Just a guess mind you,
...but early first Gen cars came with Bias Ply tires and radials as an option. Bias being stock 5" rim and Radial being 6" rim. A 6" GT rim and a 70 radial seemed pretty 'meaty' for the day, speaking economy car here =)

I can't add much more to this, but the inflate-a-spare is a 5" wheel as well. My '76 came with a full size spare and it and the other 4 were all 6". You can add all of our combined input and maybe a picture will emerge~ Harry

I don't know if there's any correlation between the 6" wide rims and radial tires; my 77 Vega wagon had 5" wheels And I'm pretty sure the sticker in the driver's door says it came with radials. Most of the other Vegas I've owned were GT's so they all had 6" wheels.

From my recollection, Vega's with anti-sway bars came with 6 inch, without bars 5 inch.

That would make sense, as my wagon does not have sway bars. All GT's had sway bars and 6" wheels; other Vegas the wheel width seemed random.

Thanks for all of the input. I'm glad I'm not the only one unsure of this, but the information here is very helpful!

Was there a option for tires sizes? Genrally a wideror lower profile tire requires a wider wheel. I know some H-body tires came in 78 series and others were 70 series. It would make sense that the wheel width would be determined by the tire that was mounted on it.
