Steering Hits Oil Pan...

Postby Teal23t » Sat Sep 20, 2014 7:48 pm

Hi ..New to the board.Just bought a 71 Vega 350 motor looks to be a stock pan and steering seems to resting on bottom of pan and grease fitting will also hit if turned to far.Has a home made motor front plate to hold motor in.no motor mounts.Seems like a age old problem. What oil pan could i use to solve the problem.
Thanks Bob

miledon makes a nice setup. you need their pickup for your oil pump. you could also make your own. some of the guys have the specs posted. no matter which pan you use, it will be close if you mount the motor in the right place. its sort of limited as to how far up you can raise the engine and keep it level (or close to level) welcome to the jungle of v-8 vegas. art

As far as the grease zerk goes, you can take it out and put it a bolt, or take a hammer and put a dent in the oil pan.

Moog inners (ES681N) have the Zert in a more favourable position, the bottom, that is another option. Oil Pan Mod's are here under "Oil System mods" Click H-Body FAQ on the left (upper-ish) http://www.v8monza.com/

Hi Bob. Another few things in this... Last I looked (2 years ago) they only make these pans for a 2 piece rear main block. If you have a newer 1 piece rear main you might have trouble finding one. If someone here on the forum knows of a 1 piece rear main pan they could chime in. The mod is pretty easy though. I did the pan mod outlined on the v8monza site with a 1 piece rear main pan. You can buy a little more clearance by changing out those 2 grease fittings to set screws and just pop grease fittings in to re-shoot.

If you have clearance on the top side you could raise the motor a bit with new/modified plates. Just keep the drive line angle in check if you do.

I'm using the Kevco pan and Don Hardy mounts. Had to modify the pan, as instructed by Kevco, and it was still was too close, so had to modify my Don Hardy mounts too to raise the engine a 1/4". Like someone said, welcome to the jungle of V8 Vega's.
