Air Bags 73 Vega GT

Postby ol55 » Sat Oct 18, 2014 10:13 pm

The Air Lift bags in the rear coil springs have split. Should I replace with the same or do something else to lift the rear a little and improve the rear suspension? Where to from here?

Thanks,
Larry

I guess my first question is why lifting the suspension would help it? Do you need tire clearance?

I had Air-Lift bags in a few V8 H-bodies; not for raising the ride height, but to control wheel hop and aid traction. Always ran more air in the right side to help make the car leave straight.

Not sure why they are there, but I assume spencerfor hire is correct. I thought it might give me a better (firmer) ride, plus a slight rake. Also maybe someday add bigger tires.

-If I don't replace the bags, what would I use to do the above? Is there something newer, better, easier?
-If I keep the bags, will I need to remove the springs to replace the bags that are installed?

Thanks,
Larry

They are still the simplest(and cheapest) solution to firm up the back of a Vega. Easy to install; disconnect the shocks and the springs will more or less fall out.

Thanks spencerfor hire for the info.

The part number on the top of the instruction sheet is MN-133 (08108).

I did not find this # on the AirLIft site and wrote an email. Will pass on any info when I hear from them and if anybody has any info, please post.

Thanks,
Larry

Anybody have a rear spring out and can measure the ID for airlift? They also want the spring length at ride height.

I'm estimating 4.5" ID and 10.5" spring length at ride height (the old bags are still in with 40 yr old springs, so not easy to measure). Please tell me if you come up with different measurements.

Based on these measurements, AirLift recommended part #60799 for the kit.

82 Camaro coil springs and poly airbags should interchange with Vega springs.

Thanks Smiley

If I am looking it up right, that would be # 60897. The Tech Specs don't show enough to know the difference.

Airlift email sent.

The vega springs measure 4.25 ID and approx. 11 tall at that dimension before they beehive.

From Airlift:
"Based on your updated measurements[from Nutt] you could use p/n 80545.

I wish they could cross the new number with the old #. Otherwise, very helpful.
