S10 front single calipers rear S10 blazer 2000 disc

Postby 67shovel » Thu Nov 26, 2015 10:57 am

I've got 1990 S10 single piston front disc's and spindles on my Vega wagon. Then I found a 2000 2wl drive disc rear end and mounted it. I've got (what I believe) is a 1990 S10 master cylinder plumbed up to the stock 73 Vega safety switch. Finally got it on the road and I have a soft pedal and not much rear braking. What's my next move to make this hogpodge work?
Thanks,
Roger

67shovel, you need to install an adjustable proportioning valve, in place of the factory one, and bleed the brakes. Once this is done, adjust the valve until all brakes are grabbing good. Brad

Thanks for a reply. I don't seem to have enough signal to the rear so would putting an adjustable prop valve on the rear line help?

My bad, I should have been a little more specific. You'll need to replace the factory proportioning valve with a unit like the one here on Jeg's site.

http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performance- ... tId=762853

This should fix the problem. The factory bias is something like 60/40, front/rear(I think). By upgrading to the larger caliper up front, and changing from a small wheel cylinder to a large caliper in rear, you need more bias to the rear. Hope this helps. Brad

I have a 76 vega wagon and on the rear suspension there is supposed to be a torque arm that runs to the transmission. Mine is missing and can't find one. Any suggestions? New or used?

You won't find a new one. What motor and tranny do you have in the car? Your only options for an arm, are to find a used one, or to fabricate one. I imagine several people on this forum have some lying around. Brad

to rodradarods

some pics might help here. Has the car been 4 linked(aka ladder bars or upper control arms added). If so the torque arm is not needed or wanted unless you do away with the uppers or ladder bars. 4 link with torque arm would cause binding issues.

Early H bodies up to 1975 do not have a proportioning valve, all that is is a distribution block. You are already getting full rear brake bias so installing a adjustable one which can only reduce pressure, not increase it won't help. You may may need a different master cylinder, is the master cylinder you are using designed for rear disc brakes?

I don't think so Clyde. I believe it's from and S10 disc/drum set up. Is just bumping up bore size enough or should I spring for a disc/disc say off of a 2000 Blazer that was a four whl disc vehical?

I finaly figured out my phone pics so here comes some pics of the Vega you all helped produce over the last 4 + years.
I want to thank you all for making it possible to rebuild these Vegas. My outcome would not has been as good wthout you all.
Thanks,
Roger :th:

Looks like a very nice high quality build. Engine compartment looks very detailed, would love to see more pics.
Personally if I was running disc/disc brakes I would opt for a correct MC designed for that type of application. I beleive the discs require more pressure than drums so having the correct style MC is a priority. After that then you can install a adjustable proportioning valve and fine tune the bias.

And the little stuff that doesn't feel that little when your doing it, like your bumper ends, capped nicely and re-chromed. You have to be pretty happy with how that turned out, :D  I would like it, that is for sure! :th: Harry

Thanks guys, I'll do an in depth post on the Vega later in the week. I'm going to get a disc/disc master cylinder now but I'm at a loss. I bought the rear S10 blazer rear out of a swap meet and when I go to buy a master cylinder they can't tell me which one is for a disc/disc Blazer. They ask me if it had 2 or 4 doors. Been digging on the web and see 4 dr 4whl drive 2003 Blazers with rear disc's. Is that the master cylinder you'd go for? What Blazers came with 4 whl disc's?
I already have the adjustable proprotioning valve now and are waiting on some adapter fittings to show from a brake company. Should I install it anyway to make sure I can dial this in even with a disc/disc master clylinder or would you just run the stock 1973 safety switch?
Thanks,
Roger

Clyde,

It isn't so much the pressure (they both need 1200-1400 psi) as the volume needed to fill the large pistons that calipers use. I'm using a 15/16" bore master with the C4 Corvette front calipers/Explorer-Windstar rear calipers on my car, vs the 3/4" stock Vega master. A smaller bore master makes more pressure, but only if there is enough volume so the pedal is at a good height. I have a wrinkled front fender at home from using too small of a master.... :cuss:

Roger I go to O'Rielly's or Auto Zone and sometimes Advance auto's sites and use their on-line parts "Chasers" (look up) to see which years came with what parts and when happy I know who has them on the shelf. Yes the smaller piston will increase pressure but like Chuck says, at the expense of volume which comes with a similar expensive education to Chuck's advanced degree
cosvega76 wrote: I have a wrinkled front fender at home from using too small of a master.... :cuss: Chuck
I am sure there are a few of those "degree's" around here. Don't ask Don't Tell that's my new policy  Ok :bang: You may have to adjust your pedal ratio to make this "just the way you want" as the larger diameter will increase pedal force required [this will decrease the pressure] or you may have to play with booster diameter to get your pedal feel right after you are happy with pressure and balance {Bias,} you may still need to add a proportioning valve. I hope this helps, I know it adds more questions but hopefully direction to the answers as well. Harry
