Should I post my 76 Monza Towne Coupe 4 lug to 5 lug convers

Postby 71GTKammback » Sat Dec 12, 2015 4:41 pm

I am sure this thread of converting 4 lug to 5 lug has been talked about a lot on here. But as I am tackling it for the first time I am going to take a lot of pics and document it the whole way through I thought I could post it on here unless everyone has had enough already?

Current car is a 76 Monza Towne Coupe 305 V8 Auto with 7.5" torque arm rear. Posi rear I assume 2.92 gears or close to that. It has the better Monza brakes and master cylinder. 4 lug 13" rims. Stock other than a performer edelbrock manifold and edelbrock 4bbl carb. 62,000 miles. Perfect power steering and brakes.

This not a race car, just a driver. Want it to feel stock and not have the tires stick out from the fender wells.

Rear end will be 7.5" Chevyrolet 10 bolt with S10 2WD axles. I will retain the entire Monza rear brake system other than using the S10 2WD 1982 drums. They have metric studs. 14 x 7 Chevrolet rally rims

Front will be S10 disc/spindle etc with Bob Gumm adapters and I have the adjustable moog bushings in case we have a camber/caster issue. It already has the larger ball joints and they will be replaced with new ones. Metric studs. 14 x 6 Chevrolet rally rims.

The reason for 14" rims is that I prefer to fill up the wheel well with tire, not rim.

I have spent a lot of time examining the Monza versus S10 discs and drums and have taken measurements, pictures and have calculated all the backspacing and estimated final locations of the wheels in the fender wells.

As a long time Vega/Monza guy (back to 1973) it will be a good thing to get this done and I hope it can help others. Once done with my 76 Monza I will attempt my 71 Vega GT Kammback.

Happy H Body Holidays!

Sounds like a good project to post. One thing to consider, I have not checked this out, is the availability of 14 inch tires. As we all know 13 inchers are getting exceedingly harder to find.

When I was looking 14" tires are only slightly easier to find than 13" tires, that was the main reason I decided to go with 15" tires. But even 15" performance tires are getting a lot harder to find than they were a few years ago.

Did you post the conversion? If so, how is it listed. I just got a 72 Vega and I'm interested in the swap. Thanks
