new jegs steering box install

Postby astre75 » Thu Mar 10, 2016 10:51 pm

I'm in the process of installing a new jegs manual steering box and I would like to lose the factory coupler has anyone else done this kind of conversion?having a problem figuring how to get from the new box back to the original column, the new box has a 5/8 36 spline shaft and the stock column with the factory coupler removed has a pin sticking out both sides and the column shaft is a little bit away from the new box spline so I'm unsure how to attach this all back up.If someone has some pics of what they have done would be much appreciated

Flaming River and Borgeson make u-joints that will have the 5/8-36 spline on one end and the "double-D" female on the other. You can either use the set screws to attach or weld it on the double-D shaft from the column.

I used a borgeson # 154918, there are some pics in the link if I did this correctly.

hey gt350fme ty for the pics,so all you had to do was just file down a very small area to get the coupling on?what is the over all length of that coupling you used?I'm just wondering cause flaming river makes a couple of vibration reducing couplings that look pretty long so a guy may not even have to do the filing thing.ty for your reponse if you could post the measurements of that coupling that would be awesome.just the length.ty

It would be 4.25 inches long overall and is vibration dampening, and if it where 1 more inch long it would indeed be just cut to fit into the DD shape of the steering shaft.
PS the flaming river unit appears to be 4.75 inch long, may need some filing to fit anyway?

hey gt350fme I think I'm gonna get the flaming river coupling for my car since it is 1/2 an inch longer,do you think if you would have used a coupling that was a 1/2 inch longer you would of had to file at all?

Maybe an extra 1/2 inch might do it, though I don't know how deep the steering DD stub fits into the end of the longer coupler?
It's close for sure, I would try the longer one if I did this over again.
Took me a couple hours to whittle down the steering shaft end to fit, but that was it.
