71 Z28 Vega Wagon Emergency Brake Relocation

Postby AMeZo RaCiNG » Mon Apr 04, 2016 12:43 pm

I would like to put a center console from a 73-81 Camaro to go with the theme of My build but the emergency brake is in the way. Is it possible to make it a foot brake and if so what is needed from the available donor car? What years what models? Thanx in advance.

If I was to incorporate a console with storage, I wouldn't fill it with a "hand brake" I think I would consider a "Tee" handle under the dash. There a few companies with kits and such I did a quick search on "Summit" and found a few. Here is one that looks good (to me I have a thing for chrome though): http://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/g ... /overview/ and the whole search: http://www.summitracing.com/int/search/ ... int&page=2 Now these are just the handles but a better search will reveal better suited parts or kits. Ever consider a Monza console? It has the e-brake in the standard location, a shift plate that can be removed to add your choice of shifter AND a storage box. I just happened to have 1 up for grabs also..... :bored:

Harry, I was trying to have this install look as factory as possible plus get the parts for pennies on the dollar from one of the local pick n pulls. My car is being modeled after a 79 Z28 so I would prefer one similar that's activated by the left foot and released with the handle under the dash. And Nutt a Monza console won't do it for Me, I'm putting in the 73-81 Camaro center console just so I can install My favorite Auto shifter the B&M Quicksilver. The universal one is cool but the stick is kinda too long. The one built for that year Camaro center console has a short stick and just looks cleaner without the bulky universal box. It'll work for My TH350 or overdrive auto when I upgrade. Can't beat it, I'll never miss a shift.

Well then you should be able to find a parking brake ass'y from a number of cars, my Sonoma has a reasonably narrow foot "jobby" that bolts on with only three screws. I believe these were pretty much the same[ish] for the whole run, I can't picture a walk through the local wrecking yard without tripping over a couple or three hundred! You can't swing a dead cat without hitting an S10/S/15/Sonoma. Didn't know the Sonoma/S10 came with the style parking brake I'm looking for. Those trucks are plentiful in our local junkyards so I'll check as soon as I get a chance to do a walk thru. Let's just say for arguments sake I hit jackpot and get the one I want. How hard is it and what does it possibly entail to convert from the handbrake to the footbrake on a 71 Vega Kamm? Been away from My baby while I'm waiting for wet sanding and buffing :bored: so I haven't had a chance to grab a glance and size it up :? Thanx everyone again for there help and input.

AmeZo the bracket is screwed onto the kick panel (the steel behind the plastic) with 3 screws two are easy to get at, third is up there! Grab it from an extended truck with the first cable, that goes almost to the back of the cab IIRC. That should get you to the cables at the existing handbrake. And there you should be able to rig up some kind of interface to the existing set-up. Do some measuring first and that may give you some choices at the yard! Harry

Thank U Harry. I'll take a trip to the local yard and bring My tape measure. I'll give My car the measure before I go so I won't have to run down there for a swap repeatedly. Thanx a lot for the info. I'll post the done pictures when I actually get it done.
