Need a bit more info, what brand headers are these? Are they specifically designed for a V8 H body? I haven't heard of any major interference issues with the steering shaft. Some headers may require removal of the shaft for installation.

Do you have the early small manual steering box ?
Did you add any extra spacers under the front mounts ?
Which tubes are hitting the steering shaft ?

You'll probably need a few u-joints and a rod end for a center support in the middle of the bend.

On My 72 I used Hooker super comps and the sbc mount kit with the trans crossmember.
It had the stock small manual steering box, there was no interference with any of the header tubes.
I used only one rubber spacer between each engine mount and frame pad, no shims on the crossmember.
You might try elongatiƱg the holes in the frame pad to move the engine more towards the passenger side.
The firewall and the rear of the K member do require massaging with a BFH.
Also power steering and later big manual boxes are wider which puts the steering shaft closer to the engine(Tubes #3 + #5)
Some aftermarket heads have the exhaust ports raised a 1/4" or so from the location of the 70's factory heads that the headers were made for.
Some people trim the outer tube of the DD Part of the shaft back to gain some clearance.
Post some pics if you can.
