Front coil spring rate

Postby Spode134 » Mon Apr 13, 2020 11:35 am

My car has a previously installed small block and front springs. It sits low in the front and has a significant amount of sag so am thinking of replacing the springs. I have had other V8 conversions and they seemed stiffer. My question is what springs to order. Are “ Monza “ springs the way to go? If they are what is the spring rate? I am ok with a stiff ride to give me increased front clearance. The rear sits high now as I have an S10 rear end with panhard rod and 14” wheels. Thanks in advance for any replies. Darrin

Does your car have the stock lower control arms ?
Monza Springs will need to be cut for shallow pocket arms.
6490’s work good in a 71-73 with a V8 and deep pocket arms without cutting.

Shallow. This is all good info. I’m going to first try to figure out what I have in there. Knowing the wire diameter for the different spring rates is great
What I would really like is being able to adjust the front ride height. The car rides ok. It just doesn’t take much to grind the headers. I can just get a floor jack under the cross member. Pucker up and stomp the gas when you see a big dip in the road

great info. what do you recommend for a 73 with stock (shallow?) front arms, and all iron SBC? I already did the camaro rear springs and I like the height.

An update on replacing the front coils. I noticed that the springs in place are new and would assume that they are a heavy rate spring as the car has had the V8 for some time. I didn’t want to take them out and start measuring. I figured it was worth trying just to increase the rate/ preload by installing a spacer. Turns out there are a few different companies that make basically a rubber doughnut you put in the coils. Seems kind of Mickey but it worked. I gained about 1-1/2 of ride height and no noticeable change in the stiffness of ride.
