Rear needs new shocks, wanting some higher stance... how?

Postby DjTy » Sat Sep 16, 2006 3:47 pm

Hi guys, about the suspension I'm completely new, I'm not even that familiar with the terms, only thing I know is that I want the car to just stand a little bit higher in the back (clearance, bigger tires, nice & cool stance). I've seen a thread posted in general for these ebay coil lift-rings

I want something similar and with some new shocks as the rear ones are leaking a fluid.

these should fit according to summit ...

What are your opinions?

(the roads here can be full of holes, so quality stuff)

I am running the KYB's all around. It's a pretty good quality, low pressure gas shock. Considering what's available for these cars I think they are very good at a reasonable cost. I worked pretty hard to get my car to sit as it does, which is pretty level. I am running a litle bigger/wider tire in the back now which gives it a more agressive look. While I would prefer the whole car to sit a bit lower, I just can't give up any ground clearance.

Yes, those are the same ones, I believe the #'s are 323129 & 343132. As far as the spacers go, are those for the front or rear? As with any shock, you want it to be in about the middle of it's travel range with the car at ride height. Once you start altering the ride height, you have to be concerned with where the shock travel is and how much is left in each direction. Otherwise you can end up with very little travel before the shock tops or bottoms out. Of course it also depends on how your car sits to begin with. Minor mods in ride height are probably fine, but it's just something to be aware of.

tnx, it's for the rear as those old standard shocks are also leaking oil.

the travel range isn't adjustable then? it's probably gonna sit about an inch higher according to mr.gasket

To lift the rear of my car, I used 3rd gen F-body rear springs. Identical as far as size, but about 1" taller. Gave my Astre the perfect stance. You can see pics of it in my "garage". Made my car look much more aggressive, and gave better clearance, and they were free! Just posted on the local F-body forum, then I got a bite.

good idea Josh, but where I'm at they will charge me a pretty penny for them and that's IF I can find a set of f-body coils... so I'll just get them in 2 weeks from summit

Can anyone tell me if the KYB shocks with the 1" coil spacers will work?

They will probably be fine. It's possible that the rear has sagged over the years so you may just be bringing back to where it was. Because the shocks are angled, a one inch change will not alter the shock position that much, maybe 1/2" or so. It's when you really start changing it that you have to be careful. Remember when folks were runing air shocks (sorry, Jon  ) they often had to install shock extenders to lengthen the shocks so they wouldn't be topping out all the time.

If you are referring to the shocks, yes they just bolt on.
