POR-20 ..... 1400 degree paint

I painted my head with POR-20 (Paint Over Rust)..... it's like the POR-15 for body panels, etc.... but this stuff is rated at 1400 degrees!!!!!

It comes in 8oz cans, quarts and maybe larger sizes.....
and three colors.... black (1200 degrees), cast iron/factory grey (1400 degrees) and brilliant aluminum (1400 degrees).

my 8oz can was $30.

I had to go with brilliant aluminum because they were out of factory grey ..... but it doesn't look too bad on the head. I'll do the exhaust manifold, too.

The exhaust manifold was painted a grey color from the machine shop where he sandblasted it. It's cast blast, or something like that..... said it would last a while......... so I'm gonna just slap it on. Intended on stripping it off and coating with the 1400 degree POR-20. Probably should....
Yeah, I think I will anyway.... gotta go get some stripper tomorrow and some black paint for the accessory brackets.

The intake is painted GM Blue... same as the block and oil pan.... need to strip that intake down a bit and put some nice grey or brilliant aluminum on it.
Same for the valve cover!

I should have stripped all the GM Blue off the block while I had the head off.... but I'm lazy. Just wanting to get it under power soon. I miss driving it.

I degreased the alternator and the thermostat housing....... then I ran them on the bench grinder's wire wheel. Cleaned up pretty good. May leave the thermo housing raw aluminum... or black.

Where did you get the Por products? I need some por-15 and don't know who carries it. Anyone know what local stores would have it? Napa maybe?

I tried all the local Autozones, Advance, NAPAs and a local independent autoparts place to no avail. A customer in one of the shops heard my request and told me that he'd just got some for a '67 Mustang project...... that he got at a place in Knoxville (40+ miles away). A place called Performance Products.... a local independent Hot Rod shop. They only had this one can.... I wanted factory grey but had to get this brilliant aluminum. Said they were gonna carry the Eastwood product instead of POR..... I got the last can.

I found a few places online that you could order them from but I needed it right then so I made the 40+ mile drive.

Brushed it on pretty thin but it covered very well. I put two coats on and it looks like I hardly used any out of the 8oz can.

I tried calling autozone and asked if the carried por-15 products, the guy said "what is that?" I was hoping to find it locally but no luck so far. I just finished patching the battery tray and wanted to use the por-15 to coat the area thats still solid but pitted. Guess I'll have to order it online and wait till it comes. Thanks for the info though.

Strangely enough....... that's the same remark I got at all 6 places I went to. They'd never heard of it. I thought everybody knew about this stuff? Especially in the auto parts business!!!!

Luckily, that customer was there and advised me where he got his. Doesn't anyone else's car hobby include rust? Maybe we're the only ones! Ha ha ha.

The only way some of those counter guys would know is if they could punch the year of your car in their computer and see if your car came with POR 15 from the factory. I am not knocking all of them, but some of those guys couldn't find a distrbutor cap for a SBC without a computer. I went to a local AutoZone looking for some grease for polyurethane bushings. The guy looked at me like I was crazy. I finally went to the shelf and found it myself. I told him where it was in case anybody else asked..............

I went to Advanced Auto to get an orifice tube once. The counter guy who was in his late 40's was telling me he owned his own garage but got out of it and into the parts business. Then when he couldn't find an orifice tube he asked if it was part of the emmission system.

I've got the POR FACTORY MANIFOLD GRAY on my exhaust manifolds and it looks great. So far after about 300 miles of driving they still look perfect. I had my manifolds sand blasted and degreased prior to brushing on 2 coats of POR.

There are companies out there that sell POR but they are few and far between. Check the POR website to see if there is one close to you. As an example there are only 2 or 3 resellers in the Southern Ontario area.

I POR-15'd my replacement gas tank that I purchased from Dave's Vega Village. I also purchased the gas tank refurbish kit that I used on the old tank....it killed the surface rust in the old tank, cleaned it out...then POR'15'd that tank too. What an amazing product. The old tank is as good to use as the replacement tank I put on the Astre. I purchased the POR-15 from a company in Montreal, Canada...but that was quite a while ago. I like the block paint. Nice job. Looks good.

I used POR-20 by brush to repaint the motor in my 75 GT about 2 years ago. Its held up well.
