Cheap sub frame " Bolt through " advice

Postby HI WINDING MONZA » Mon Apr 23, 2007 7:44 pm

As I was making the front plate mounts for my new motor, I was going to bolt 2 angle iron pieces to the frame rails that the plate mount was going between , I remembered a trick I had seen on the Spike TV show " Trucks" . If you are running a bolt or bolts through the frame rail , weld in a piece of tubing that the bolt can fit in so not to colapse the frame rail when you tighten them. I used 8" 1/2" bolts through the frame rail with some gas line steel pipe ( Non Galvinized) I got at Home Depot in the plumbing department . I cut out a hole on both sides of the frame rail ( top and bottom) with the smallest torch tip I had ( You could use a hole saw or plasma cutter too!) , cut the pipe to size , and then weld in. Cost of the steel pipe was less than $3 for a 3 foot piece. ( allready pre cut) Saved time and a run to the steel supply store. The frame rails are kind of thin to begin with and add rust and a big V8, you have a " bolt rip out " waiting to happen. Doug In AZ 8)
