Side Louver Polishing

Postby acstestinc » Mon Jul 23, 2007 10:25 am

Not too bad of an end result eh?

Requirements:
- Fine Scratch Plastic Polish
- Soft Cloths
- Q Tips
- Eldow Grease

Note: Don't use a tooth brush, too aggressive.

'72 Vega with '93 Camaro LT1/M29 T56/12 bolt 3.31. 16" IROCs all around. Sanderson headers into duals with an H-pipe and Flowmasters. It's loud but at least it's faster than your grandma's Buick. pwned.

Just trying to help out my fellow H-body brethren as much as I can. LOL.

I'm just a stickler for detail. Had to be in my line of work. One thing that always stands out when I go to the local "Show & Shine" car shows are cars that are 80/90 % but have some stuff that hasn't been touched and stands out like a sore thumb. One guy has a nicely painted engine compartment and underside of the hood yet the hood latch and windshield washer bottle looked like junk. Didn't make any sense to me and it's been like that for at least a year! For less than an hour's work it would have been finished.

Paul

PS: Polished my sill plates last night. You should see them shine!! LOL

hmmmm, I think I have some kind of a combination, I don't think they are painted black but I have silver painted on the edge of the louvers.

Silver edging was painted on for some H-bodies eg: Starfire's / Skyhawk's etc.

AusRs: Could the black that's coming off on your parts be oxidised plastic instead of paint? When I polished mine the cloth would come out pitch black from the sun baked plastic and that was on parts that hadn't seen sunlight for 25 yrs.

I may have to try that, I was going to paint mine, they aren't that bad, but thought they might look dull next to everything else. What kind of plastic polish did you use??? I can't tell.

It's a Fine Scratch Polish for Plastics from "EM" that I bought at a plastics company along time ago.

I'm sure that if you call up a plastic's distributor they can tell you what to get.

I considered painting as well but the polishing worked out better and is original.

I have some some parts, from a parts car, where the deterioration went too deep and I couldn't polish it out. A more aggressive polishing might work otherwise they will need to be painted.

Nice tip Paul, I too, was going to paint mine but I like the polished look better (don't have to worry about chipping paint down the road). One more detail to add to the mix.
