REMOVING CHROME FROM GRILL INSERTS

Postby 78spyder » Mon Oct 22, 2007 9:00 pm

Heres one that may require some chemisty, or might even be not possible. The Astre grill inserts have chrome surrounds. Picture a grill insert with a chrome border all the way around it. Now it gets weird. The chrome is chipped and lifted in several areas. Its real chrome too, on a metal backing, maybe the thickness off a pop can and vacuum bonded from the factory to the grill. Its Very difficult to remove as its glued/formed. I tried some lye, then some muriatic acid and neither will react to the metal. It seems to be magnetic and very thick. If I can get it off, the inserts will paint up nicely, and as I'm sure ya'll know, Astre parts arent plentifull so replacing is a course I'd rather not take. I think trying to use a blade or scraper would result in deep scratches. I wonder if theres any chemical which may work?

Maybe worth a try. You said glued. Maybe some heat applied with a hair blow dryer would soften the glue.
