Sticky interior vinyl.

Postby NHRA Stk Starfire » Wed Nov 24, 2010 3:32 pm

Hoping someone here has run into this before. The steering wheel and console ( maybe dash also ) are very sticky in my Starfire. My guess it has to due with the ozone or sitting in the sun so many years. Anybody got a fix for this?

I had to put a steering wheel cover on my GT wheel because of this same problem.

I recently bought a steering wheel that was very sticky. I tried everything I could think of to get rid of the stickiness, Super Clean, Windex, Laquer Thinner, Mineral Spirits, Por Marine Clean, and nothing made it better. I finally decided to paint it to match the rest of the interior and problem was solved. I used Sem Color Coat, available from Eastwood.

Never thought of painting the wheel and console. I always thought there might be something that would work better. How close to the original color could I get? It is the aqua color.

Check this thread at hotrodders.

Mentions some other 'solutions' that have worked for others - acetone, a product from 3M, etc.
They say the gooey ooze is the plasticizer that keeps the plastic from drying out. Too bad they didn't use more of it on the plastic interior panels.
I have the same problem with my Cosworth Vega steering wheel. Might try one of these 'solutions'.

The 3m adhesive remover I may try. I know we have some here at work somewhere. That would be nice if it worked.

Where could you find it? Local auto parts store: Advance Auto, etc?

I purchased a large bottle at Wal-mart. I have seen it in most auto parts stores as well.

I've used pure SImple Green before with a stiff brush. You've got to work it hard, but I've usually had a nice "normal" wheel afterwards. The one in the Astre still feels good.

I will have to look but I think I may have some at home. Worth trying that before spending my money on something else to try.

My 17 yr old son tackled his gooey steering wheel with Bleech-White and 3M Scotch-Brite pads and got it damn clean! :th:

I used 'Goof Off' on 75 Vega steering wheel which was all gooey. Worked good, put it on, let it sit awhile and rub it off...
My steering wheel looks good as new.
Goo Gone did not work for me.
