how to remove side windows in wagons?

Postby 67shovel » Thu Sep 15, 2011 3:15 pm

I'm doing the body work on my 73 GT Vega wagon and was wondering if there was another way to get the back side windows out other then cutting the rubber gasket. I'd cut the gasket but I don't know if I can replace them. I know the string trick to reinstall but lost on removal. Anybody done it before or know how it's done?
Thanks,
Roger

Lots of flat head screwdrivers. Start at a corner, wedge the screwdrivers between the rubber and the body. Move around the rubber and body. Once wedge in right, they stay on their own. Take your time and be careful. Once you have most of the rubber bent down away from the body, have somebody inside the car push the glass out while you are outside ready to catch the glass.

I have done this several times on my wagons and everything comes out fine with no damage.

I'm not a big fan of using flat-blade screwdrivers to pry around windows; one slip and it's time for the broom and dustpan. These plastic trim removal tool sets are cheap(under $10) at places like Harbor Freight(or if you're Canadian like me, Princess Auto) and will make the quarter window removal a snap(instead of that weird noise that a car window makes when it explodes). When I remove a quarter window from a Vega wagon or hatchback, I tuck a piece of rope under the inside lip all the way around as I pry it up. It holds the rubber out enough to let it relax while I'm working on it; that way I can get the window out without a helper.

Thank you for your replies. I've give it a go Saturday. Anything special to do with the aluminum window trim on the outside of the car?

The aluminum trim is just about impossible to remove from the rubber moulding until after it's out of the car. Leaving it out until the window is back in does make installation easier.

Well, tried taking the windows out Saturday and it went great. I used that idea of tucking a rope under the lip. Actually, I grabbed some 1/4 & 3/8 hose and stuffed it under the turned up lip to hold it up and had them out in minutes with the aid of a catch person on the outside. Thanks again guys.
I just set them on the shelf with the aluminum trim still ingaged and haven't tried removing the trim but I figured I should have it loaded in the rubber when I go to reinstall. I'll go with "Spencerforhire's" suggestion and install them after install.
