Cosworth conquers Focus in E Prepared!

Postby cosvega76 » Mon Aug 17, 2009 8:01 am

I took my Cosworth Vega to a high-speed Autocross event at Blackhawk Farms Raceway near Rockton, IL on Saturday. The new Yokohama Advans showed their stuff as the ol' Cos stuck like never before. As the final time run was coming up, I needed to drop a second to beat a Ford Focus for the class honors.

Making a bonzai run in the final pass, I managed a .95 second improvement to surpass the Focus: 1:38.689 to 1:38.775.

Teresa drove the Corvette to a new personal best. Her 1:33 was a vast improvement over the 1:40 from two years ago. I guess corner working, watching road racing on TV and go-karting are working to her benefit!

Cool! Way to drive!

Hopefully I can get my Cosworth out of the garage and back on the track. Too many things going on. I still have to re-replace the front crank seal. The SKF ones from NAPA are too thick, and do not seal well. It's pissing oil from the bottom, and was dripping from the dizzy shaft as well. The CVOA seals are the correct size.

Aso finishing up a Monza rotor and M/C swap. Just finished making a brake push-rod for the later M/C, and just need to plumb new lines and bleed it.

Clyde,

I managed to get the Cos done in time for the Roundup in July. The exhaust didn't work out, but that's another story. I picked up the tires from eBay a couple of weeks ago, this was their first outing. Sticks like the Corvette in Turn 3 now, pretty exciting! Now, if it only had the Corvette power....

Here is a photo of the Cos from the autocross at the Roundup (thanks to Paul Chicky, who has a stunning Mahogany-hued Cosworth).

What puts your car in E/P? Do you run SCCA rules? If so, I would think you would want to use slicks. Which Yoko Advans you were on? Good job though.

They're Advan A048s, the old Spec Racer Ford tire. With our rules, any tire with a treadwear rating less than 140 adds 3 points, which moves it out of Stock into Prepared. I, personally, don't understand SCCA allowing sticky tires in a STOCK class. To me, that isn't stock.

I like SCCA rules, but wouldn't mind seeing a "spec" tire for stock classes. But it ain't gonna happen. I go through at least one set of tires on my Camaro a season, and at over two-hundred bucks per tire, amateur motorsports gets expensive quick. I've considered Kumho XS's or going back to Victor Racers, but a new set of Hoosier A-6's are hard not to love. There are also those in SCCA that think once a car is over a certain age, it shouldn't be allowed in a stock class any longer, regardless of modifications.

I looked at A6s at about $180 apiece. I got the Yokos for $70 each. Since I was running street tires on this car before, this is an immense improvement.

They're 205/60-13s to fit on the stock Cosworth wheels.

Interesting looking group of cars you guys have running. I've only seen one guy run an Impala SS and it wasn't driven very well. You guys had a couple of them. Looks like fun, although the rules are different from what I'm used to.

The Cos took the class win for the year in both my club (North Suburban Sports Car Club) and the sanctioning body (Midwestern Council of Sports Car Clubs)! I went to the NSSCC banquet last night, and will be heading to the MC banquet in January.

Here is a photo of the Cos in Turn 3 at Blackhawk Farms Raceway.
