My first post!!!

I'm looking at building fun AutoX and Grassroots Motorsports Challenge (GRM) car.

For those not familiar will GRM challenge, you have a budget equal to the year of entry to build a car. In my case, I'm shooting for 2013 ($2013 to build a car). The car will compete in three events: AutoX, drag race, and concourse. My entry will be nothing more than pure automotive fun . . .

Anyway, since the budget includes the cost of the car, I have to be VERY selective where I spend my $$$$.

So far, I found and awesome roller with S10 axles, lsd and 4.10 for a decent price. I also found a cltch pedal assembly as well.

I'm thinking about adding:

Vortec 350 + LT4 hot cam
T-5 (already have)
17x9.5 Corvette Wheels (already have)
Big front springs (factory G body or S10)
Rear springs ????
98+ Camaro brakes
Shocks ???
Gutted to the max (ballast back to race weight ~3050lbs)

I think I can pull the off well under that budget . . . What say ye? Suggestions. . . Hints . . .

Sounds pretty cool but that sure is a small budget.

I set a $3k limit (including the car) for my '73 Wagon autocrosser. I'm currently at the limit with shortening of the driveshaft and some brake lines to go. Of course, the budget will go up next year.... wait, it IS next year! Hmmmmm?

Overkill Racing economy control arms
S-10 balljoints/spindles
Cut Cosworth front Springs/Cut stock rear springs
Fly-n-bye.com brake adapters to get the 4th Gen Camaro brakes on the S-10 spindle
Monzaz rear internals (3.42 Limited Slip)
Monzaz 28-spline axle shafts
Monza rear housing (torque arm needs shortened and panhard bar mounted)
4th Gen Camaro rear brakes
215 cubic inch Buick V8.... all aluminum (320 lbs)
3rd Gen Camaro T-5 5-speed with the 0.63 OD
16" IROC wheels to fit over the big brakes


The green doors were swapped in since the originals were rotted.
I have a GT dash with factory gauges and a Tim McCabe V8 modified tach that I'll be swapping in.
The rest of the car will be stock until I get some racing seats and then some harnessess and eventually a roll bar for harness attachment.
Then to do the roll bar right, there'll be some subframe connectors..... argh.... it never ends. $$$$$$$$$

Awesome wagon!!! I originally wanted to do a 215/Rover V8, the bellhousing and flywheel would be nearly 1/4 of the budget So vortec it is . . . Even warmed over 305 would work and give me 300 lbs break for CP.

I'm gonna be watching this thread closely. Got bit by the autocross bug again after a 17 year haitus after driving my son's 328is in an event last weekend. I used to autocross the bird all the time in the 80s and it sure would be awesome to bring it alive again. Now all I need is money...

Nice to see some more people building these to turn left and right not just go in a straight line. Thats a really tight budget, but if you have a lot of the expensive
stuff already and can do some trading that will help.

The budget is tight, but the challenge really focuses on the building part. Before everyone thought their rusted, busted non running yard ornaments were worth $2000, you could find some good stuff to build to go fast.

However, since I do not possess the fine skill to fuse metal with fire, I have to go the buy cheap and buy smart route

Found a race seat and have received the manual pedals and 98+ Camaro brakes.

Going to look at some more Corvette wheels with tires tomorrow or Friday.

I decided to go with a 99 Vortec 305 for the 300lbs weight break in CP. There is one in Atl that will get a look over this weekend.

Hopefully next weekend the car will be in my driveway.

Picked up some 84 Corvette wheels (16x8.5) and tires yesterday $150 bucks!

Also scored an awesome deal . . . an iron head LT1 with all accessories, maf, ecu, and starter for $200 . That leaves me some money in the kitty to platy with even after I do a basic gasket/seal/oil pump job on it.

I guess that 300lbs break don't matter now

Well . . . remember that part about not having the ability to fuse metal with fire? That's what is needed on the roller I was going to pick up this weekend. Two rust holes, on under the driver's foot box and other at the driver's seat mount . . .

Let's see if I can find another roller . . .

I think if that is all that is required some new skills are in order (or trade your skills with someone that can weld) MIG welders are cheap as H:censored:l now and way better than the older "cheapie" welders, I taught myself how to MIG with 3 whole seconds of instruction If "Mr Patients" can do it, I have faith that anybody with 2 or more active brain cells should be golden!(just sayin' it is really simple after you get the hang of it!) Practice on some left over tid bits and call on us we'll all do our best to help out I'm sure. Harry (Or you could break the Man code and read? those paper thingies that come with all this crap we buy Yah right!)

Well this has been shelved for now as I couldn't find a Monza that was within the budget of the Challenge or wasn't a complete rust bucket

Strike_Zero, where are you located? I'm in the Seattle area and I have a 75 Monza that might meet your criteria.
