Widest front tire possible on stock suspension ?!

Postby hugegoalforhugegrip » Sun Mar 24, 2019 6:16 pm

Hey everyone,I have '74 vega that has 175s on it right now.
I checked the sticker on the hidden part of the door and it was originally 155mm wide.
What do you know from experience is the widest I can go without
-rubbing wheel wells
-fender lip rolling
-lifting
What width rim did you use ??
Would 225s fit snugly ??
Thanks for reading.

What diameter wheels are you using? You need to watch the overall tire diameter, stock tires are about 24". I have 215/60/14's on my Monza which I had to do very slight massaging. Vega may be different.

I have 175/70/14s on it right now I plan on using something between 22.8 to 23.8 inches diameter. My dads notchback project has 24 inch diameter tires that he may not use because they are dry rotted but they look like they would rub fenders once they get hot.

I think if you are using tires within the diameter you should be good. Of course wheel offset also comes into play and believe it or not, alignment settings. Different alignment setting will position the tire differently especially at when turned at full lock. Hopefully some Vega guys will chime in.

Here's mine, wheel is 15X8 zero offset, tire is 225/50-15. Suspension is lowered about an inch. This is the left front. The third picture shows front clearance with tire turned to right, fourth is rear clearance with tire turned to left. On occasion I hear a slight rub over bumps, can't see what or where the rubbing is.

Do you have any room to spare on the inside for more backspacing?

In the front the tire does not hit lock to lock but it does get quite close on the inside, I would say there isn't room for more back spacing. I had the rotors re-drilled for the 4X100 bolt circle. In the rear it has the same size wheel and tire but I needed to use a wheel adapter because of the wheel's bolt circle. I reduced the thickness of the adapter as much as possible because it moved the wheel too much to the outside. The adaptor was 1 inch thick but is now 13/16 thick. I have a couple pictures showing the rear clearance. The fender lip in the rear was rolled to clear. If I had had the rear axles re-drilled I think they would have enough room without the adapters. The front fenders were left stock and not rolled.
