what can the typical small block h body weigh?

Postby shoebox1.1 » Wed Dec 06, 2006 11:40 pm

take the AVERAGE h body monza with small block and auto trans.. what do some of your cars weigh? im more concerned with street cars although race car weights would be nice too. im building an aluminum headed v6 street strip with low race weight a major priority. i NEEED to get this car to weight 2400-2550 empty. no rear interior, aluminum drums, light wheels, glass hood etc.. are all on the menu thanks

My '72 weighs in right around 2800 without me in it with an iron headed SBC and a PowerGlige with a 9" rearend. heels are light ConvoPro wheels. All steel all glass except for a fiberglass hood, which is on the heavy side. I have a full interior except for carpet, and I run two aluminum drag seats, which weigh only 10 pounds.

Hope this helps.

It always seems that Vega's were lighter, even with V8's installed. Most new V8 Monza's were around 3100lbs. There were a lot of heavy components like the catalytic converter, AC systems, smog pumps, cast iron exhaust & intake manifolds, Power steering, and extra insulation. With a heavy focus on weight removal your goal is probably reachable but it will take every trick you can think of.

Well if you are serious about weight loss (on the car) you really need to look at just about everything and see what you can either eliminate, replace with aluminum components, drill "lightening holes" etc. Keep in mind every little bit adds up, it may not seem like anything but when you throw it all in a box and weigh it you'd be suprised.

andrew your car only weighs 2800lbs without you ?? man that makes me smile , mine should be a tad lighter then with a aluminum headed sbc and some gutting , i,d be glad if the car weighs less then 3000lbs with 2 bottles and me staged . as it sits right now the only gutting is removing the heater , and removing most of the floor and factory wheel wells to fit a bigger tire . the 25.5 cage and laddebarcoilover set-up will add some weight but i,m hoping to keep her all steel and under 3000lbs , if so i have a decent shot of running in the 8,s with the bottle cranked wide open LOL

Assuming the scal (and my memory) ar correct. That's with the two turbos that weight 15-20 pounds each, as well as the water-to-air intercooler that weighs 35 pounds, along with 40 or so pounds of water and ice.

Things that helped offset that weight are the front drag tires, which weigh a lot less than street radials, removing ALL the HVAC stuff under the dash, having virtually no exhaust and no mufflers after the turbos, split front bumper, electric water pump, alumium radiator, aluminum/plastic master cylinder, swapped out the TH350 for a PowerGlide with a Dedenbear case, the rear Aerospace brakes saved about 40 pounds alone.

I'd like to upgrade the front brakes to lightweight Aeospace units as well, and run a set of the new Magnum 2.0 wheels, which only weigh about 9 pounds each. :D

my buddy has aerospace discs up front on his wagon , he states they are marginal at best at 149mph , he has added a chute , but said the brakes take a bit to slow the car down , his car weighs under 2800lbs staged , i,m gonna do something a little different to my brakes up front , i,ll post some info when i actually get started on it , gotta find time LOL , been working 7days a week pretty much for the last month , i,m burning out
