Engine Displacement = 1/2 x Bore x 1/2 x Bore x PI x Stroke x Number of Cylinders.
This is an exact, mathematically correct formula.
You can do this easily with the scientific calculator on Windows.
356.87969783762493847340748650196 is the actual displacement. :)

Somebody posted a simpler, fairly accurate formula here a while ago. I CRS.

I never saw that formula Tom. I always used bore x bore x stroke x .7854 x number of cylinders. Comes out to 356.880532776. Pretty close to what you got. It would also be alittle harder to fit 356.87969783762493847340748650196 on the valve cover. :lol:

Or even easier would be let this calculator do it for you. http://www.thedirtforum.com/Cidcalc.htm
Even calculates comp ratio.

Matt,
Same thing, simpler formula. Yours suffers from a rounding error. :)

How is that simpler formula derived?
Volume of a cylinder is the area of the circle times its length
Area of a circle is "Pie are squared"

Volume of a cylinder = PI x (Radius)^2 x Length
(Radius)^2 = Radius squared = Radius x Radius
Volume = PI x (Radius x Radius) x Length
Radius = Diameter/2
Volume = PI x (Diameter/2 x Diameter/2) x Length
Volume = PI x ((Diameter x Diameter) / 4 ) x Length
Volume = (PI/4) x (Diameter x Diameter) x Length
PI/4 = 0.78539816339744830961566084581988
Volume = 0.78539816339744830961566084581988 x (Diameter x Diameter) x Length

So ...
Engine Displacement = 0.7854 x Bore x Bore x Stroke x No. of cylinders
V-8 Engine Displacement = 6.2832 x Bore x Bore x Stroke
