Latest Effort For '08

Postby Stivan » Thu Apr 10, 2008 1:36 am

Well, I think we're ready to try and make a pass. Been all winter working on it. It's a '80 N/B, with the following:
430" BBC(T-Deck)-JE 9.5 pistons-GRP 7.1"rods-Stock Steel Crank(lightened 4lbs for Piston/Rod Combo)-Coated Bearings(Cam Too)-Dart 308 Steel Hds, 2.25/1.90 Valves,Sprgs 345/950 on seats-Harlen Sharpe Rockers-Crane .745I/.776E(Roller)-Victor TD Manifold-C&S 1400 Alky Blo-Thru,Selenoid Valved(No Needle/Seats)w/Electronic Fuel Sensors-Procharger M-3, pulleyed for 12lbs on 12 rib belt(more forgiving), Extreme Velocity Dom. Hat-I'm using an Alky setup, so I don't have to worry about intercooling.
M&M Glide for 1.5k hp, 4.88 gears, 31X14 Wingfoots. . . .Don't have any idea what it will do. Computer profiles tell me somewhere in the low 8's. . . .we'll see. Maybe see you'all at the H-Body Nats in Temple. . . ..

Whats up with the solenoids on the carb bowls? Very interesting to say the least. What are you expecting out of it?

Those hood cut outs are cool. Kinda like a bio-mechanical muscle buldging look.

The fuel bowls are from C&S Specialtys in St Louis. . .They're head and shoulders above anyone else in carb design as far as I'm concerned. . . They built the carb for a Blo-Thru Alky setup, which we all know, requires approx. 80% more volumn. They wet flow each carb for each particular application. You give them all the particulars, and it is truly a "bolt on" unit. I truthfully didn't even have to tweak the idle screws.. . I did, but put them back where they were originally at.

As for the selenoids, they control fuel flow. There isn't a needle/seat big enough for alky, in a single carb blo-thru, which will require almost 5 gal/minute to keep up. Also, you don't have to worry about boost sensitive regulators. You just set your output pressure 3 to 4 lbs above your boost pressure, and let 'er go. The selenoids will hold 250 lbs pressure.

Well. . . tried two passes at KCIR since the post. . I've got some problems with my fuel delivery. At the top of low gear, it darn near died. . .. got about a 2 second burst in high, and then it did die. Gauges showed 12lbs boost, but only 9lbs of fuel pressure. So I suspect my fuel pump(Aeromotive 2000) which I was told, would handle it, might be the culprit. . . Fuel pressure was pre-set to 15 lbs, and I trust my C&S regulator. . . I'm going to do a flow test on my pump tomorrow. .. .

Oh Yeah, even with the short, lack luster performance. . . . it did run a 11.50 @ 96mph. . . Yes, while it lasted, it was the most, I've had under my right toe, since I drove a triple engine gokart, in a much younger man's clothes. . .

I'll post results, for anyone interested.

OK. . . .for anyone interested, we found the culprit. It "wasn't" the A2000 Elec. pump. It "was" the special deluxe, super obglob, Russell filter I had between the cell and the pump. It has a wire mesh screen, with a "paper" filter in it. . .I didn't realize this. Alky doesn't work with paper. It impregnates it, swells it up, and it will not pass anything through it. I have solved the problem. Throwed the filter away, and bought a good funnel with a good screen in it. . . .

So I guess we'll try it again, when it warms up, quits snowing, sleeting, and raining, here in the midwest.

OK. . .tried it again. 1st pass. . .nothing, just popped and cracked. #5 plug wire fell off. Put it back on, tried again. Left hard in low, then died, Hit High, sporatic lurching, jumping and then died grave yard dead. Took it home, highly dis-enchanted. . . .. .

Found the problem. Screws in rotor cap loosened up, causing rotor bug to miss the contacts in the cap half the time.

Will try again soon. . . . ..
