Powerglide or stick with the th350?

Postby rustorbust » Tue Jul 01, 2008 9:09 pm

I posted this in the general section to start with but thought I would move it over here to see if I can get some other responses.

So I came across a real good deal on a powerglide. The transmission has a reverse manual body, tranny brake, turbo input shaft...ect... the whole 9 yards, and I beleive a 1.82 first gear. I couldnt turn it down so I bought it and now im debating whether or not I should put it in the car. I have had intentions of putting a trans brake in the car real soon and rebuilding the transmission anyways. I guess my question is if anyone has went from a turbo 350 to a powerglide and did it pick up or slow the car down? The motor in the car now is probably making about 450 to the rear wheels and it has gone 6.66 on a 75 shot of nitrous. And its not that much of a street car anymore, im not so much worried about the street ability of it. Oh it also came with a continental 5000 stall which I think is to much for the little 8" slicks compared to the 3700 that is in the car now. Looking for opinions or input?

I considered a glide but we tested in a friends 3000# sbc car. Car went 10.40's with the glide and converter was not optimum for the combo. Swapped in a th 400 and the car went 9.80's.

That all depends on your rear gear ratio and your tire size as to whether or not it would work better. I had 5.13's and a Glide with a brake but with my 461 HP motor it was a dog. When I used that with my 668 HP SB it went 10.224 weighing 2740, a 5200-6000 8"convertor, 33 x 14.5 slicks and the 1.76 glide. It seemed to be a good combo. Now with the Turbo 350 and a 4000 stall from Redneck transmissions in my car I can run 4.10's, the 461 hp SB, and now I run 10.20's still. With the bigger motor in it with the large stall and the turbo 350 I can run high mid high 9's. I have a very expensive computer program that I can use to find out what would be your best choice before changing it all around. It is a chassis dyno by Dyno Sim that is pretty accurate. The only thing with a Turbo trans is that you have to spend a little more $$ for the transbrakes and buy better parts to get them to hold together unlike the glide. Just my .02 and experience trying them out.
