73 SRD ProStock Vega

Postby Scooter66 » Sun Feb 28, 2010 2:44 pm

This car was found around the NewYork,Jersey,Pennsey area. The former owner had it for 15 years before we got it 3-4 years ago.We have the original build sheet from SRD(Speed Reaserch Developement)in Malvern,PA but the original owners name had been cut out.The car was acid dipped, foam filled and with A&A glass nose, hood, deck and bumpers. The Chassis was mostly moly with basicly stock front rails that were modified and originaly painted white. The outside had been,in order of appearance, white, candy red with gold base, multi colored stripes all pearls and candies on a yellow to orange blended field, and finally as we got it teal. From magazines of the 70's I've found photos of all sorts of vega's,most being SRD's,but not this one.According to one article about SRD a complete roller could run 35 grand and that was more than a top fueler at the time.If you were to invest that kind of cash i would have to believe the original owner was serious about competing and not just a local track guy.The one photo that I've found online that is the closest was on the georgia drag site, the car is white and lettered up for Barry Setzer driven by Lamar Walden. This is clearly NOT the Little John Buttera car but there are details that would be driver/car specific,it even returned to SRD at some point for updating.
Here are some photos,Any ideas?

hey scooter i think i know that car pretty well. my friend al gesue owned that car for years abd he wabted me to buy it from him, rolling, in about 1991 and i decided to build my 67 nova instead. he told me it was one of two srd acin dipped cars oud of Ps.im pretty sure it had the nice multi colored paint(positive) and it had a dana rear and i think(?) all lexan. my friend named joe boyce bought it instead and hsi first ime out with it was my first day out with my nove(1995) and that vega was running 1030s with a good 331 cu in sbc. later i think joe put in a larger cube engine, but not sure if he ran it with new engine. i remember he welded something on rear housing because it was leaking and i also remember he hand painted the car a sort of green color(he was cheap) then the car sat in a big storage can with alot of other nice cars for a while and then joe moved to northern Pa about 4-5 years ago. he still has business here and i can reach him. if you want to know the real racing history then you need to call al gesue, who ran this car and ran real fast and was well known with the car. if you need eith of the phone numbers just pm me and i will get them to you. nice ride man. i still have the nove and i still should have that car now, as i could have bougt it for less than 5, 000 back then, and it was in perfect shape. good luck chevy art PS al gesue and myself live around ossining NY(30 miles above NYC and joe boyce lives by matamorous Pa

hey monza addict that car was definitely my buddies car. he bought it brand new and had it a real long time. that was his crazy paint job. that car was here in westchester NY for many years untilit went to Pa a few years ago; that car saw alot of real time at the track and i know for a fact it lived in a beautiful mansion with its own full size room (in the house) car was like family and got in and out through a big 8 foot sliding class door.. talk about a pampered car. thats the truth chevy art

thats my buddy al. a real knowledgeable drag racer. always went real fast. had a good partner and enginebuilder named gil stewart. he is still here around us.. i call him every so often just to say hello. gil used to build those little 288 cu in chevy small blocks with the pontiac heads and run those little motors up to 10,000 rpm (oet of the hole around 8000, and run the cars in the 8 second bracket. and that was a long time ago. one of the go fast pioneers art

Scooter
I link the Vega its looking really good. I like to go back to the 70-73 front end on my car. I ve been thinking about cutting one up, squeezing the grill down and sloping the fenders, and after seeing the new 70-73 camaro front ends at the ADRL race last weekend. They came out exactly the way a vega front end should just bigger. I post a pic when I come across one unfortunely the event got rained out before qualifing was finished so I never got any pics
