First day out this year for our Father Son project

Postby flathead52 » Sat Mar 27, 2010 9:24 pm

Well not a bad first time out this year. We didn’t break anything that’s a good thing... We did go 8.48 in the 1/8 with a 1.88 60ft time. We still have some work to do. But he bolted his street tires on and drove it home.

38 total locked per carb sheet? I dont understand, is the Carb guy giving timing settings? What engine combo is this?

I just did a cut and past from my spreed sheet sorry. 38 degrees total timing we have a MSD e-curve dist we have it set at 38 degrees total timing locked in. It retards the timing 20 degrees under 600 rpm. The carb settings on this day for our 650 double pump are power valve blocked off and squar jetted with 72's.

It's a 1968 327 block 40 over with 10:1 flat top pistons actual comperison is 9.87:1
GM iron Vortec heads 1.94 1.50 valves, the "Ghetto Grind" to clear the cam lift with old school Z28 spings.
Cam is an elgin 1015P int .468 exh .488 hydo lifters comp roller tip stamped steel rockers
sanderson headers, air gap rmp intake. let me know if I missed something.

Have you tried less total timing? I usually end up with 32 total for most flat top combos.

38° is waay too much timing for Vortec heads, 32° to 34° would be more like it, 8)

Just FYI, that cam is gonna want about 14° to 18° of initial timing as well, 8)

I can set this MSD digital e-curve distributor with 10,15,20 or 25 degrees of advance. I also can have it come in at 2000rpm to 4000rpm at 500rpm intervals. Then I can add vacuum in the amount of 10,15 and 20 degreases. How does 17 degrees initially then have 15 degrees come in at 2000rpm. What would you think on vacuum on top of that?

Vacuum only really comes into play at cruise, WOT = pretty much 0" vacuum, so you could go for about 10° or 12° initial, 32° total, then add about 8° or 10° of vacuum. You may have to play with the actual settings a bit to get it perfect, but the bottom line is that the heads want about 32° total, and the cam wants (probably) about 16° or 18° initial. The vacuum can help the idle and bottom end, and you may need a less initial if you're running it off manifold vacuum, (which I would recommend, if you're going to use it at all) (8)

We finely got back to the track for some tuning. He ran a 8.24 and a 8.25 as a baseline with old timing settings. We then went to a total of 32 degrees with 17 to start with. He ran a 8.17 and a 8.19. We ran a total of thirteen passes this day. Our problem looks to be in 60ft ,it was all over the place. If we used our best 60ft as a base and added in the rest of the passes, he had nine passes within three hundredths‘. So I just need to get a constant 60ft. We also saw 84 mph for the first time, three times as a mater of fact and four 83.9mph.
