Fuel cell's + Hatchback + NHRA rules=???

Postby 71LS1Vega » Fri Sep 17, 2010 6:40 pm

I was reading the NHRA rules and it states you have to have a firewall between you and your fuel cell. right now my cell is just in the trunk but obviously is open to the whole cabin. What are you guys doing to seperate you and your fuel system?

My car is not tubbed if that is any helpful information. Im not sure if these rules even apply to me im assuming only if i get an NHRA lisence and/or run 9.99 or faster? Sorry if i come off a little uninformed, its mostly because i am!

You will need to put a firewall in to be nhra/ihra legal. Local tracks can be a little laxing on the rules, but go to a national or divisional race and they won't let you run. Just take a piece of sheet aluminum, .032 or .024 I think, and mount it to your floor, trim it to fit your wheelwells and caulk it to seal it. Then trim the top to fit your hatch when it closes and put a seal or gasket across the top to seal it against the trunk.

I put my cell under the hatch floor with an acces door. The weight in back helps.

Three gallon cell under hood might be tought to do unless you cut some stuff out.

I actually have no inner fenders and tube supports. But a fuel cell under the hood probably wouldnt be good for me. i plan on actually driving the car alot on the street. i currently have a 16 gal cell which it doesnt need to be that big.
