Doug is concerned with the difference between 4" and and 100mm bolt patterns; it's really not a large amount- approximately .063" That means the each stud must deflect by half of that amount- .032". This argument has been raised on this forum before; some people claim it's dangerous, others say it doesn't really matter.
What I have seen personally is cars driving on both the street and strip with metric wheels on inch bolt pattern cars and vice versa. Besides examples like the black Vega in question, there's lots of "tuner" Honda drag cars running old school 13" slicks or wide road race rubber mounted on H-body(!!!) 13" wheels; the extra offset of the RWD rim lets the wide tires clear the struts.
Speaking of the black Vega with the 4/5 bolt mix, I suspect the rear end in it is out of an early A-body Mopar; they had 5 on 4" bolt pattern axles that the 5 on 100mm Daytona wheels will fit(sort of) and a total width of 55.6", only a bit wider than stock H-body.
Art noticed the good traction at our Nova Scotia drag strips; considering these facilities are not even permanent setups but actually the "back-up" runways at a couple of airports, and add to that the fact that they're run by volunteer organizations, the quality of the track prep is truly amazing. Both tracks are set up from scratch on Friday and torn back down on Sunday night; cables have to be run for the "Port-a-Tree" timing systems and P.A. systems, as well as all the other infrastructure necessary to run an event has to be installed and removed for every race. I know we're getting off topic here, but it is MY thread
, so I have to include a pic of the Cape Breton Dragway timing tower- it's actually built out of an old school bus and is towed off the strip and stored elsewhere between races!
