Parachute mount

Postby LL8 Vega GT » Sun Oct 10, 2010 2:45 pm

Looking to set up a chute mount on my vega wagon, just wondering if anybody has done this and if they have a suggestion as far as specific location for good deployment every time. I have heard if it is not right on the wagon the chute will not deploy properly due to air flow over the wagon.....

So here is what i came up with so far, I need to weld the chute pack mount to the top member, but you get the idea. Hope it works.

I tried to keep the mount location to the chassis close to the vertical CG, and wanted to be able to remove the pack from the tether mount so it is a separate piece that will hold the chute pack and remove by a pin. Technically I think this is not accepted by NHRA (the fact that it can be removed by a pin) but technically the speed is not high enough to mandate the chute anyway, so I went with function. It also had to clear the hatch to open. I sectioned the bumper to tuck it in, and notched the center of the bumper for clearance of the mount.

I had a friend in the 60's who hooked up a military chute to his Ford racer. He anchored it to the rear end. When he popped the chute it yanked the rear end out from under the car!
