i have 71 vega panel ihave to do something with steering putting 434 cu intostock frame steering will hit pan cannot raise engine

Dimple the oil pan. It doesn't take much to get the required clearance. Be carefull that nothing inside makes contact afterwards.

Rack and pinion conversion is fine for a drag car, the slow steering some complain about is not a bad thing for that application. You should be able to adapt something from a Pinto/Mustang II or even a Fox-body Mustang. I've heard Datsun 240/260 Z is possible. If you insist on Sticking with GM, Chevette or Fiero are pretty close to the right width. Be carefull in your junkyard hunting; almost nothing from a FWD vehicle will fit work. They're all "rear-steer" and actually turn the opposite way.
