The very first time I ever rode in a V8 vega the exact same thing happened to me. I was about 17 and my buddy who was the same age had just built it. He wanted to take me for a ride, when he grabbed second gear the hood flew off. I remember looking back and seeing the car behind us diving for cover.
The second time I ever rode in a V8 vega (another childhood friend) the guy lost it and ended up driving us thru a cornfield! You wouldnt believe the mess mature ears of corn can make of a car. I will never forget the thumping and breaking windshield as we tore thru the cornfield at 70 or 80 MPH and slowed to a stop. I guess I had a rough H-body start.

almost had that happend to us last weekend at the track. I made one pass and let it cool, never took the hood off.

Next run at about the 1/8th mile the right rear corner of the hood came open and up, I could see the carb from my point of view.

Not cool!

Fun with h-body hoods

here's one for you,our first nos pass with the car,we ran 122mph,I had the hood held down with three duz on the outside edges,no problems @115mph on motor,at 122mph the center of the hood bowed up so much that I could see the motor and the ground through the front of the hood, there was at least 2 inches of open space under the front of the hood,I can't believe the hood did not fly off,,no cracking either, put 2 duz in the cowl area and solved the problem,,WOW,,if you could have seen my eyes bug out when that happened,,I could not slow down fast enough,,

do you have the fender wells removed ?

Mine is all stock - steel body and full fender wells. I am afraid to remove them because I think that will let air into the engine are and cause it to want to exit through the hood area, pushing out on the hood.

No,it has full inner fenders and wells, the new cowl style hood grabs air at the windshield and crams it into the engine bay,,hence the hood try to leave,if I put an air box on the carb and seal it to the underside of the hood it would act like ram air,,may do that for next year,,
