make shure you put the check ball for the acc pump in the correct hole. there is a slot and a round hole that it can go in , it goes into the round hole.

Thanks, but I'm sure I have put everything in the right hole. That was the ball that was below the thumb sized spring, right? It went into he right hole.

Did you unhook the vacuum line on the dizzy when you set timing?

I actually thought about that and tried to remember if I was going to do that or not (been 15 years since I had a car I did the ignition for myself). I did not, since it wasn't mentioned in the shop manual. I'll redo the timing tomorrow with the vacuum off. Thanks!

Edit: Btw I have never in my life had a car where it's that difficutl to access the bolt to loosen the distributor to do the ignition timing!

Don't forget to plug the hose so you don't have a vacuum leak.

Your timing is probably about 20 degrees retarded if it was set with the vacuum hooked up. Should really run better set right, you'll probably have to fiddle with the carb some more now. Good luck

That sounds like a lot, yeah! Actually I have my butt safely parked in "daddy's chair" in front of the TV, it's close to 10 P.M. here, so no more car until tomorrow. I'll let you guys know how it goes! :)

Ladies (if there are any here) and gentlemen, the winner of this year's "Darwin awards for car repairs" is in: Mastiffen! Of course it was the ignition... Getting that right fixed it at once! The only thing I now feel is a very, very slight hesitation after a full pedal off and then a lower medium press. But that doesn't last more than a second or two. I'm chalking that up to an old car. Or can it be the float? It was way off from the standard, and it's now set to specifications, but can that be a bit to lean?

Thanks for the help and suggestions, everybody! Especially Matt, for the final piece of the puzzle!
